What should I buy...
« on: January 07, 2025, 09:42:44 AM »
I was previously using a SkyWeather2 kit on a Raspberry Pi DIY kind of setup. It worked well for several years, but I just got around to setting it up at my new house. For some reason, I can't get the Pi that runs the weather software to connect to my WiFi. When I boot the OS from a different microSD card, the Pi connects just fine. So then I tried to download all the weather software for the SkyWeather2 and it seems to not run and be incomplete. It doesn't look as there is any support remaining for it, and frankly, I'm frustrated with it and don't have the time to keep trying to fix it (spent about 4 hours so far). Thus....
I want to buy something new and shiny     How's that for talking myself into a new purchase?
I would like it to do the following:
Live weather display of some sort at my house.
Live weather display on my phone or laptop when I'm not at the house.
I'd like to be able to look at historical data without having to pay. Like, how much did it rain over the past two days? What was last August's rain compared to this August.
I'd like to have a webcam with either streaming or every 5 minute images of the current conditions show up on the same website as the live data feed.
I don't mind Linux, and I have 2 Pi's at home, but I don't want to have to do a bunch of coding or searching forums endlessly to try and make things work (I used to enjoy that, but time is limiting me and I get more frustrated, LOL).

So, what should I be looking at?
I like the Davis VP2 Plus sensor group, but can't really figure out what I additional things I need to buy to make all of the above happen (Console versus IP gateway versus WeatherLinkLive).

Thanks for helping me spend some money :)

Hmmmm, are you thinking of hosting this site at home, and everything that goes with that [including what your ISP allows etc] or are you thinking of paying for a webhost?

From the standpoint of the images, my Pi setup before had a camera attached to it and it would upload a photo every 5 minutes. It wasn't really ever an issue with ISP.
For the data, I guess I was envisioning the data saving to a local PC which would be on my network and I'd open a secure port for querying the data? Perhaps this isn't a good solution. Do most people just pay for the WeatherLink Pro account to look at historical data?

The Davis VP2 ISS along with Weatherlink Live is an excellent setup.  It will update to Weatherlink.com (either basic free or paid Pro account), and data is viewable from the Weatherlink APP.  CumulusMX will work well with this for local program and data saving and website uploads.  Of course you could also get the Weatherlink Console if you wanted to also have a separate console to look at.

.  I don't know on numbers but would guess from the postings on the forum slightly more than 50% Pro, with a few Pro+ that rely on it for agriculture, etc.

Enjoy,
Paul

Hi

That's exactly what I do. The website is hosted on my Pi and I can connect to it through a secure port.

Cheers
