The Good Older Days
« on: May 11, 2020, 04:52:32 PM »
I was going through some old pictures looking for some of an acquaintance who recently passed away.
While searching I also found this one with my PET of about 1979.  I bought it used, and still have it!

As a member of the local Optimist Club I organized the annual community golf tournament which had about 100 participants, some golfers and some duffers.  Trophies were awarded for low score and for low net (after handicap).  With no previous background or experience in computers or programming what-so-ever, except by reading the BASIC manual that came with the PET, I was able to write a little program to calculate a player's net score.  Just enter their score hole-by-hole and immediately got the net score.  Pretty amazing for the time!

Enjoy,
Paul

Ah, my father had a leather one that looked like that, and it had the two 3 digit combination locks with the spring loaded release buttons. I liked playing with it when I was a kid. I just liked the noise the release button made, it was so satisfying to trigger.

"Looks like a Samsonite™ brief case which was molded plastic, not leather."
Correct, it was a presentation to me from the Optimist Club and proudly used it for many years, and have it in front of me now and still usable!

You will also see I had a good backup device...  ;)

That old picture is not weather related, but weather was certainly on my mind at the time as we got closer to the tournament day.  I recall regularly watching the local TV news/weather and the forecasts in the newspaper in preparation for the golf day.  No websites or weather services to view!

And notice the bottle... but I am not a drinking person!

Enjoyed,
Paul
