Lighting detector not showing on console
« on: July 28, 2021, 12:01:39 AM »
I got a lighting detector for my ws 2000. My firmware is pro-c1.71. The new one is 1.74, put it on a Sd card as Instructions say. No confirmation of firmware update from card still v1.17.

Nothing indication on console its detected lighting detector. Am at a loss?

Or does it only show when you get lighting?

There are 2 types of firmware to be considered.

The display firmware which you have mentioned and is updated by SD card.
This controls the display in effect. The Lightning sensor data would be displayed top right corner just above the Humidity readings

The other firmware (wifi) controls the I/O on the console and dictates if sensors are received and the output to the Internet and so on.
This is updated by a mobile app. In the case of the Ambient stations (AWNet I think) and for Ecowitt and other clones of the HP2551 it is WSView.

Both of these need to be relatively recent in order to detect and display the lightning sensor. If there is no activity the numbers will remain as 0 for days, distance and count.

Did you follow the instructions at https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.msg426256#msg426256 ?
That whole thread is for a good reason named: MUST READ !
You may have overlooked some step.
And, it's helpful to remain with the common naming conventions: there is no firmware 1.74 for the WS-2000, only 1.7.4  8-)

Does your sensor show in the sensors ID section of your console (setup - gear wheel) ?

1.1.7 is a rather old console firmware version - then only factory.bin might work (user.bin works (also) with the more recent firmware versions).

the name of the file must be either factory.bin or user.bin - no factory_1.bin, factory(1).bin etc. !!
The SD card must be of the SDHC type ! Other SD cards (e.g. SDXC) won't work.
The console will pick up the file once inserted properly - usually no power-cycle needed.
The card needs to be inserted properly into the slot (label shows away from you, contacts towards you when inserting looking at the display).
There is some gap between the slot and the canvas, make sure the card doesn't slip in there.

1.1.7 is a rather old console firmware version - then only factory.bin might work (user.bin works (also) with the more recent firmware versions).

I now have a strength meter by the indoor humidity. Does mean now the lighting sensor is working? We don't often get lighting here.

I have it inside, so 1 and 2 up 3 and 4 down. Number 1 from what I see is if the detector is inside?

it's not strength meter - it's a last reception  indicator - you can check at
https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.msg420959#msg420959
the lightning sensor should be on the top right (3).
From what I can see from your picture is that your WH65 outdoor array and the indoor temp/hum/pressure sensor are connected and regularly sending data.
The WH57 (lightning sensor) doesn't show.
You can check at setup (gear wheel), More [setup], select with arrow, press manifying class (-) once on it.
Then select sensors ID the same way.
The lightning sensor should be 6th from top.

will post more after 40 min - busy now

Never had that strength indicator before near the humidity. Found a very fast SD card, put factory_1 bin it was labeled on blank SD Card, turned off display, put card in turned on display, no indication it updated, no lighting sensor showing up in setting, but the extra strength bar by humidity I never had before

I always thought nothing for lighting came up until you had lighting, which made me think the strength bar by humpty was light sensor strength bar

don't give up too early  ;)

in the picture below you can see the sensors connected to my console - for you it should look similar.
You should have the WH65, T&HP sensors active
And the WH57 (lightning sensor) - if the WH57 not, select the ID field of the WH57, in the pop-up dialog choose "Disable". Save.
Then select the ID field again, now select "Register" and save.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

If the sensor doesn't show after that, check the sensor again - batteries properly inserted = a) fitting, proper direction - take a new set of batteries - alkaline will do.
If the signal doesn't show, go through the above procedure again (disable, Register, 2 separate steps !).
If all of this fails, the WH57 sensor is likely to be defective (or of the wrong brand or frequency - Ambient consoles only read Ambient sensors).

Ecowitt consoles receive  sensors of all Fine Offset clones(of the same frequency)  including Ambient, Ambient consoles only Ambient sensors.
The sensor should show 915 MHz for a WS-2000 console on its reverse side (sometimes inside, open battery lid).

Still no good, changed batteries, and flashes red to show its working, but still no show. It's hopeless. The only thing I can think of, it's not usa frequency as I got the station through Amazon. And lighting detector through eBay. So much be running different frequency is all it can be and I am correct.

The station is 915mz and the sensor is 433 mz, so in this case won't work, just checked it.

yep - 915 and 433 won't match ....
lesson learnt - next time buying a sensor not from Ambient check the frequency first  8-)
provided using 433 MHz is lawful in the U.S., you could get yourself a GW1000 Misol brand (ebay, aliexpress, ...) which receives at 433 MHz.
With the new CumulusMX software (free, from version 3.140 on, to be released in the coming days), you could combine both consoles into one dashboard or webpage.
Or just forget about the 433 MHz WH57 and get yourself an Ambient model.

At least you got your console updated to the latest firmware.  :-) [tup]

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING OTHER THAN AN AMBIENT MODEL, IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE DATA ON YOUR AMBIENT CONSOLE

The caps were intentional. Yes frequency is also important , I don't believe Ambient sells anything that is not 915 MHz .

Also, there is a distinct portion of the RF send from Ambient sensors to the console that is required for them to be recognized. You cannot use any other FineOffset sensor and expect it to show up on an Ambient console. Even though the base manufacturing for the units is the same. Ambient , has a little something added , and will check on the console side to make sure it is an Ambient sensor. You cannot reasonably circumvent that.

If you still want to use that sensor, which with the varying frequencies and confusion, I would not, you would need 433 MHz Ecowitt console. I would not pursue this route.

If I were you, I would ditch the sensor, or sell to someone here that wants it, mostly in Europe.

Adding late, without knowing where you are , if you are in the US, 433Mhz is Not an approved frequency for this use

The 433 MHz area is Asia and Oceania - in Europe it's less and less common, here 868 MHz is predominant and has less reception issues due to better range/reach.
