New to PSW, need help for windspeed remote location
« on: March 12, 2025, 01:47:05 PM »
I've been researching this forum and I couldn't find an answer for this scenario.

I need to measure wind speed at a site with the following considerations:
-No internet connection
-Barely any 3g/4g signal
-Nearest building from site is approximately 600meters away.

Ideally I'm looking for a PWS which can log wind data offline and store it locally so afterwards I can download. From what I can tell, Davis Vantage Vue can possibly achieve this but I'm not completely sure as I couldn't find it on the official documentation but a few reddit posts mentioned it being possible. Ecowitt also seems like a possible option but I'm not sure which accessories I would need. (read here that a gateway and wind sensor might suffice but I'm not sure)

I'd be able to go to site at least 1-2 times a week.

Thanks!!!

Simplest solution would probably be a windlogger with a Davis 6410 anemometer - see: https://www.windlogger.com/products/lewl-wind-logger-1

Sorry, but I don't usually have time to help with individual issues by email unless you are a Prodata customer. Please post your issue in the relevant forum section here & I will comment there if I have anything useful to add.

Ecowitt also seems like a possible option but I'm not sure which accessories I would need. (read here that a gateway and wind sensor might suffice but I'm not sure).
An Ecowitt GW3000 gateway has SD card write/read capability. That plus one of the various wind sensors should be all you need except you will need to provide power for the GW3000.  Most people would use a USB adapter plugged into a 120VAC receptacle. If you can't do that, battery is possible, but commercial power is less hassle.

The GW3000 has an external antenna (for the sensor to gateway radio) and would be the best gateway choice. 600 meters is a long distance for sensor transmission and there could be issues, especially if there are obstacles (trees maybe) in the way. Putting the gateway near the sensor would solve the distance problem, but still you need a way to provide USB power.

How are you thinking of providing power?

The nearby building has power. I'm thinking that maybe it would be better to place the equipment on the roof of the building instead. I was thinking of using the WS68 Wireless Solar Powered Anemometer with Light & UV Sensor.

I have two WS68 sensors operating, one for 4 years and the other about 6 months less. I have never had a problem with either, and both are still on the original Energizer Lithium batteries from the install date.

If you put the WS68 on the roof, most likely the external antenna of the GW3000 isn't really needed, but I'd still choose the GW3000 gateway for its SD card capabilities.
