Raspberry Pi and Cumulus question(s)
« on: April 05, 2025, 11:35:44 PM »
I’m planning on using Raspberry Pi 5 8gb and Cumulus as my data logger for Davis VP2, and was wondering, is there any other physical hardware needed to store the data and display it?

From what I’m able to read up on, it doesn’t seem like there isn’t any other external hardware needed besides the Raspberry Pi, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Then to download the software on the Pi and I don’t need anything else. Am I understanding this correctly?

Please share if there is anything else needed so I can purchase the necessary supplies soon.

You're missing what Davis calls the data logger.  The actual component that connects a console to the PI.

If you have one of the new color panel units, you can't hook that to the PI.  You'll need something link WeatherLink Live in between.

If you have the old console, you can still buy the Davis data logger USB, or a third party one like WiFiLogger.

Is there any other work around to where I don’t have to spend that much on the weatherlink live? I have the new color display.

Could I link the sensor suite directly to the pi somehow or is that what your saying, I need to have the weatherlink live?

https://www.manula.com/manuals/pws/davis-kb/1/en/topic/davis-6313-weatherlink-console

"Also, the only current route for data export is via uploads specifically and solely to weatherlink.com. In other words, no local API is currently available, and so a connection to a local PC or other computer is not currently possible. If you need more local data logging and analysis than is provided by the 6313 console itself then consider the Weatherlink Live unit instead of or as well as the 6313 console. (Remember that any number of receiver devices like consoles can listen simultaneously to the signal from VP2 transmitters.)"

https://www.manula.com/manuals/pws/davis-kb/1/en/topic/accessing-data-from-wll

Live WLL data can also be accessed by other local devices (eg programs running on another computer on the same local network) as described in the API documentation for Weatherlink Live at: https://weatherlink.github.io/weatherlink-live-local-api/

They should do a better job of showing how there are two main and very different product philosophies you need to realize before choosing the "Inside" portion.

I hope my legacy consoles live longer than I do.

So just to make sure I’m understanding correctly, it would be useless to get a raspberry pi for data logging? I can use the current subscription pro or pro+ to download data from time to time or get a 6313 unit?

Without fully understanding some of the lingo, that’s what my brain translated stuff into. I need simple turns until I learn more about this topic LOL.

Without a device that can accept a data logger, or a WLL that is accessible by IP within your home network, there is nothing that you could do on RPi that you can't already do with your colour console and WeatherLink.com.

..... or get a 6313 unit?.....

Don't you mean "...or get a 6100 unit?".. ??  You already have a 6313 colour console?

The Pro subscriptions would give a lot of abilities with your data.

Haha correct I do have the 6313 unit, I was mistaking the model number with the 6316 unit. I’ve had a lot of model numbers thrown at me over the last few days. Thank you for that correction.

Well it sounds like I am good with what I have an can extract data from WL and no need for additional hardware.

With the 6313 you can upload your data to weatherlink.com and see it through that website's bulletin and Weatherlink mobile App.  With a Weatherlink.com Pro (paid) account you can also access/view your logged data and graphs in 5-minute intervals.

From Weatherlink.com with a basic (free) account CumulusMX can download your data at 15-minute interval and do all the usual CumulusMX features, including upload to a website https://www.komokaweather.com/cumulusmx4/index.htm

From Weatherlink.com with a Pro (paid) account CumulusMX can download your data at 1 minute interval.

Enjoy,
Paul
