I've used Midland weather radios for decades - I have a WR300: https://midlandusa.com/collections/weather

I've had RadioShack 12-250 SAME receivers for years, but recently had to recommend currently manufactured NWS SAME receivers for alerting our county SkyWarn group.  I bought and tested the Midland 120 and found it to be a good value at $40.  It has the advantage of choosing Tone/Voice/Light notification of alerts and adjustable alert volume settings.  Battery back up is 3 AA cells.  It can be bought on Amazon.

I live 45 miles from my most desired NWS transmitter (that exceeds the 40 mile design range of NWS) and it works with its built in antenna on the second floor. On my first floor, all receivers need the simple 36 inch dipole i hung in a window facing the transmitter.  The Midland has a convenient external antenna port to connect it to.

Your mileage may vary.
