I believe the top is black to help with snow and ice, but black top is not suitable for American Southwest where snow and ice is non-issue for the most part. Sun on the other hand...
Also, there's not enough separation between top body and sensor enclosure. Air inside body heats up to 30-40 degrees (more on 100+ days) above ambient temperature and there simply isn't enough separation nor air volume in sensor enclosure.
And looking at the Atlas Elite pictures, it seems, similar design flaws are present. Looking at Davis Pro2, even though, top is black, sensor enclosure does not share the wall with upper body and there's also enough separation and sensor enclosure is much larger.
Anyway, Atlas is not my primary weather station anymore (replaced with Davis Pro2), therefore I wasn't afraid to experiment with. The temperature curve looks much nicer without fan. Still, doesn't come close to stock Davis Pro2 where I get +- 1 degree in average when compared to NWS staton (without software set offset).
