Will this power supply work with Davis rain Guage heater?
« on: November 12, 2021, 11:13:16 PM »

Have the Davis heater but lost the transformer part when moved I guess.
Need help with what to get for a power supply to get running for winter.
Will this work if I have this in weather safe location to plug in?
24 volts is what need believe, but the watts not sure.

There is this 12v one too.

Why not get the original?  https://weatherspares.co.uk/collections/davis-instruments/products/davis-rain-bucket-heater-power-supply-7379-014?variant=20218124140640

If you would rather not the listing has the specs for the supply visible, looks like 24VDC and at least 1.2amps, so anything rated over 28.8 watts should work.

Thanks. I am in US and don't see the original available for purchase here, and shipping etc would add up if order elsewhere. If someone knows where can purchase in US let me know where.

Thanks for help with watts.

I would recommend against using a DC supply. A simple transformer (120V to 24V) is ideal and gives AC power.

The problem with DC is that it is more likely to support corrosion. AC is typically used for water sensing and other wet applications to avoid corrosion or dendritic growth.

I used a transformer rated at 100W on the secondary, but this was more than needed. I would go with something with some additional margin, a little more than 25W. (at 24V, the resistor will cause a 1A current draw or about 24W) You don't want to stress the transformer with a 100% load, it will probably overheat and shorten its life.

I think that this topic has come up in the past on WxForum. Search around and you should find what others have done including my own installation.

I bought a cheap temperature controller with an external sensor. I have it apply power only when the ambient temp approaches freezing.

p.s. added a photo of my transformer (eBay) and controller.

That one would be fine. It is high enough above the actual load to give you some margin. I especially like the protection built-in. Good find.
