How about adding WH56 Lightning Sensor support? **solved**
« on: April 05, 2021, 02:43:32 PM »
I'd like to see support for the WH56 Lightning Sensor added in a future version.
This is a great sensor that can feed webpages with lightning sensor data. Granted it's not a Boltek but hey it's affordable.

This should be simple to add since Boris already has supported for Ecowitt sensors.

For Boris - this may help:

I guess you mean the FineOffset/Ecowitt WH57 sensor (the "6" might have been a typo).
The Wh57 is supported by Meteobridge since long - if you have one, it shows under the live data as "lightning"
if you have MB connected to a GW1000/WH2650 console.

Yeah it was. Weird thing is mine does not show up even with strikes in Meteobridge, though it does in the Ecowitt app.

I see that you have a Davis station.
Have you connected a GW1000 too as 2nd station ?
Primary station = Vantage, Station 1 the GW1000 ?
If you have only the Davis connected, MB will only show the Davis sensors ...

Actually 3 stations - Davis, Purpleair and the GW1000 :-)
I can see the Indoor Air quality one (forgot model number) from the GW1000, the Indoor temp sensor, and an addtl. temp/hum sensor I have for it on MB, but the Lightning detector does not show up, even with strikes.

From the GW1000 inbuilt sensors you should see indoor temperature, humidity and air pressure. The additional T/H sensor would be a WH31.
Did you check in the WSView app under Device List ---> GW1000B-WIFIxxxx  -->  More --> Sensors ID the WH57 ?
Assuming the batteries put into the WH57 are good and proper polarity is set (better to cross check that again), i.e. batteries put and in the right direction.
For a test, put the WH57 near the GW1000 to exclude potential interference or attenuation. Take the batteries out in put them back again (check polarity)
to make it send its signal anew.
What do you see in the WSView app ? The WH57 is #6 (or #7 if it's a WH2650) from the top, under the ultrasonic anemometer and above the WH45 (CO2).
Press re-register. There should be a battery symbol and a signal strength icon visible next to an ID (may take some time after starting the re-register process).
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
If nothing appears there in spite of new batteries and verified insertion polarity, the WH57 is defective.

The only thing that might also help is to reboot your GW1000 (power-cycle it = disconnect, wait 5 seconds and re-connect the USB power supply) and let it acquire the sensors again.

Or finally a factory reset of the GW1000 by help of a staple. The hole is between the two top air slits on the reverse side.
"Reset Mode: Hold the black button for about 10 seconds till the red light and blue light flash simultaneously for three times will reset the gateway to factory settings.
The history data, Wi-Fi settings, calibration etc. are all lost and need to be setup again via WS View app."

The WH57 appears in the WSView app, has an ID and signal strength.
I have tried all of the above options before and it still does not show up in Meteobridge.

I believe the unit may be defective I will try another.

Does it also show a value in the Live data view of the WSView app ?  - it should show date/time and distance of the last strike.
If it doesn't, it's defective. (Unless you rebooted the GW1000 between the last strike and now - then the GW1000 forgets the last strike).
You can try creating a fake strike - e.g. with the flash of a camera in front of the WH57.

And what's your GW1000 firmware version ?
Latest version is 1.6.6
And - what's your Meteobridge version ?
(the numbering differs  depending on whether you use it on a MB, MB Nano, MB Pro or MB RPi - latest date is 9-April-2021).
The latest MB versions are compatible with the 1.6.6 firmware. Earlier ones not.
There were issues with several sensors as with FW 1.6.3/1.6.6 the GW1000 API changed significantly - so that needed to be mirrored at the MB end.
From what you tell so far, the GW1000 and the WH57 seem to work properly - and lightning data is shown on ecowitt.net and in the WSView app...
=>
Something could be fishy with your MB installation then ...
You might want to do a full refresh of your MB installation then (keep/make a database backup beforehand and import that database after the fresh re-install).
WS2350 1.6.4, GW1000(3) 1.7.5, WH2650 WiFi (2) 1.7.5 (test/backup), GW1100 2.1.8, GW2000(3) 2.1.8/9, HP2551 1.6.4/1.8.5;

I am running the latest Meteobridge (5.1 Apr 8th)

Today I got a new WH57 from Amazon, it shows in the Ecowitt app too, shows strikes, etc.

I reset the Meteobridge. The same issue, all sensors except the lightning will appear.

This appears to be a Meteobridge programming issue.

I have tried contacting Boris about it but he ignores me.

Boris' reaction times are unpredictable.
Also, you sometimes have to be careful with your tone, wording etc. - he can be sensitive there.
Plus, working on other things - his priority list is not published.  8-)

Did you open a ticket (created a post) in the forum.meteohub.de ?
(I didn't see it there yet - or it is already pretty old - or has some enigmatic subject).
https://forum.meteohub.de/viewforum.php?f=61
Assuming you fit into this category - otherwise it's the other one.

I would give it the subject - "WH57 lightning sensor values don't show in raw live data (station=GW1000)"
describe your setup: primary station = Vantage, station 1 = GW1000;
WH57 shows in ecowitt.net and WSView but not in MB raw live data.
latest FW: GW1000 1.6.6 - MB 5.1 8-Apr-2021

There it will get more attention - also from users who are meeting the same or similar issue(s).

Also, if I were you, I would correct the typo in the subject of the original post: change WH56 to WH57 !

Where exactly do the lightnings not appear ?
- live raw data ?
- min/max data ?
- History ?

After doing some cleaning up, I think, Boris got it now right (almost - see min/max below).
- In the live data view the lightnings show - only the last one with distance and time (in minutes, hours since occurrence) - and only for two days (I guess along with the RAM database)
- In the min/max there was a mess up earlier - now lightnings are shown in two categories: number of strikes and distance (min/max)
Only, after some time, don't know exactly after how much, probably also two days, need to observe more closely, they also disappear from the min/max history, what in my opinion they SHOULDN'T.
Yesterday I had 24 strikes - the strikes are still in the min/max history for month, year, all time - will observe for how long.
- In the History only the number of strikes are visible under lgt0total - lgt0dist strangely doesn't show any values in the hour or minute fields, only in the graph

The sensor doesn't show up in Live Data - no matter what. It is just not there. I can see the temp sensor, the interior temp, and my Air quality sensor - but no lightning...

I showed 24 strikes one day we had a lightning storm in the Ecowitt app.

Another interesting issue - the GW1000 after about 6 or 7 days, sometimes 8 (random), would start flooding the Meteobridge with non-connect errors and kill the entire Meteobridge and the data logger until you reset it. Ref: https://forum.meteohub.de/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=15691  Boris just ignored it as me having some issue with a program on my network, and I have nothing connecting to it except Weather Display for the Davis sensors. Once I disconnected the GW1000, no issues. His product has some issue with either large multi-sensor setups, or the GW1000, and I've seen this so much from him where he ignores bugs and dismisses them and gives them no further thought. Just don't know what to do or say, or even figure out what I'm paying for with the "support" fee every 2 years.

I never got a resolution from him either on my MB Pro Red and it constantly corrupting the DB, all he kept telling me to do was "rebuild the database and reboot". I could see it running out of memory constantly (when it gets to about 2-4MB free it starts corrupting). There is an issue in it with a large sensor setup for some reason.

OK - maybe your GW1000 is faulty... or the WH57 ... - or the MB Pro Red you have has an issue (hardware).
I had one of mine refurbished (motherboard replaced).
I don't think it's because of the MB software.
My issues with the software are almost all solved meanwhile - there had been quite a few. Quite some GW1000 firmware change related.

I had however several issues with the MB Pro. With a single station it works just fine.
For more than one station and more than the "common" set of sensors, the little box is just too weak.
My out-of-memory, erratic reboot ... issues were finally just an overload problem.
I have to take up a lance for Boris here who supported a lot in solving my MB Pro issues.

Now I have one station per MB Pro - and they run without issues.
The multi-station feature and the persistent minute data feature, especially when you have plenty of extra sensors, just kill(s) the box.
Plus using extensively the service/event feature and publishing to the Weather Networks. Not to speak of regular (hourly) backups.
Backups are real performance eaters especially when the database has grown big.
With the minute-based data archiving my database has grown to 500 MB for one station.
With minute based archiving this corresponds to 265 different (direct or to be calculated) sensor data to be written to the database each time.

The only hardware where it works flawlessly with multiple (here two but probably also with more) stations, 15-minute backup,
minute data archived and posting to Weather Networks and service/events is my RPi4-2GB Meteobridge installation on a 16 GB SLC microSD
(with an external hard disk for the backups - repurposing an old 500 GB laptop HDD).
The performance is just great, 5-10 times faster response time in the GUI (browser) than the MB Pro with one station and hourly backups, no out-of-memory issues.
I moved my weather network postings to the RPi and distributed http/ftp requests for my templates (which didn't fit on the RPi, 20 max) over the two MB Pros.
Now, everything is running just fine.

"rebuild the database and reboot" may be a short-time symptom healer and may have become necessary, but the real issue in my observation is capacity, hardware.

Moving to a RPi4 (and having the MB Pro as backup) may significantly increase joy and reduce stress and annoyance.

Hey everyone! I recently am up and running with a WeatherBridge. I have a GW1000 and a WH57 lightning sensor, and appear to be having the same issue as others describe above, but I'm not clear on what the resolution was. I can't see the lightning data on the WeatherBridge, though it shows up on Ecowitt.net. I am running the latest firmware on the WeatherBridge and GW1000.

Any clues here would be appreciated!

WeatherBridge = Meteobridge (sold by Ambient) I guess.
If you have a GW1000 and a WH57 as the only external sensor (no outdoor temperature/humidity, rain and wind sensors which the GW1000 can receive), then MB/WB cannot handle this yet - see https://forum.meteohub.de/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=15802
It's a bug (a not thoroughly programmed logger for the constellation) in the logger software.
I've recently told the developer again that this constellation occurs more and more often now and he should look into it - not sure where it resides on his priority list.

I've asked the OPer (@azchrisf) to correct the thread name (not WH56 but WH57 !!) earlier - maybe Boris (developer) ignores the thread because a WH56 doesn't exist ....

Thanks for the information. I guess I'll await a bug fix. I do have more than just the WH57 connected to the GW1000 (it's picking up the Ambient Osprey sensor array and a soil moisture sensor). The soil moisture sensor and sensor from the Osprey array are being received just fine.

If your GW1000 is on firmware 1.6.8 (=latest firmware) and you have the WH65 sensor array, then it should receive the WH57 also - if not, check sensors ID in the WSView app. Disable - enable.
In this constellation Meteobridge should also pick up the WH57 (it will however show in MB and the WSView app live data display only once a lightning strike was recorded - and will stay there for 2-3 days !!).
You can try to create a fake strike for test purposes. Releasing a camera flash directly in front of the WH57 usually creates such an event.

Thanks for the tip! It looks like overnight my WH57 registered a lightning strike, and it is now showing up on the WB.

Thanks for the tip! It looks like overnight my WH57 registered a lightning strike, and it is now showing up on the WB.
You may notice that in the Min/Max data it may say 0 strikes. For some reason, some minor bug still to be corrected, MB/WB always shows 1 strike less than the real number.
If your WH57 records 5 strikes, the min/max will show 4 only. It's on my bug list and reported to the developer (but obviously has low priority - a "good" thunderstorm produces sometimes 100s of strikes, then 1 missing ....)

Not sure what you changed but it is now working for me.
THANK YOU SO MUCH

Now question - what does the "energy" field mean?
Edit: N/m found my answer in the datasheet, basically meaningless number.
