As noted by Ken within another post, the NWS API is currently down.  I'm getting 502 errors for everything.

Is there a quick fix to turn off NWS alerts?

I edited Settings.php and added after the NWS settings:
// TEMPORARY QUICK FIX: NWS API down
$SITE['NWSalertsCodes'] = array();

but is there a better way to turn if off?

That should work fine.  No entries means no work for nws-alerts.php to do.

The last NCEP status from an hour ago says still down but I'm now successfully pulling fresh data.

now they've announced it's restored.

resolved.

FYI, the outage was while the API was being served from College Park (the DC that had the major chiller outage) and is now being served from Boulder DC.  Hmmm...
