Do I need a PC linked weather station?
« on: December 07, 2019, 02:58:48 PM »
Hi
I have posted questions about CumulusMX and my dead Fine Offset WH3081 station.  I am looking at a new station Ecowitt/Mysol or similar, but I can't get my head around PC connectivity.   I am used to my base station connecting to my PC by usb and using Cumulus to see the data.   (The display was just a bonus)

So, most of the stations I am looking at send data to Weatherunderground etc, but do not connect directly to the PC to run Cumulus.  My question is,  what is the downside of using these stations?  I'm looking at a WS-WH2900 from
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32881809479.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.1000013.1.342a2da27o4ekD&gps-id=pcDetailBottomMoreThisSeller&scm=1007.13339.146401.0&scm_id=1007.13339.146401.0&scm-url=1007.13339.146401.0&pvid=03449e4e-15b2-43bf-a70a-7a8e18e7b220

My fallback option is Ecowitt GW1001 but their freight to New Zealand is almost as much as the hardware!  I can get stuff direct from China via AliExpress much cheaper.

If I do end up with one of these "clones" with a nice display, any idea what the chances are of being able to use them with a GW1000 if all else fails to use Cumulus?

Thanks
Ian in NZ

You won't be able to use Cumulus 1 with the new versions of what you are considering. They changed the protocol to support new things and Cumulus 1 stopped being developed. But move to Cumulus MX or other software (Meteobridge, Weather-Display, WeeWx) and you are back in business.

So there are still ways to run PC software via network connectivity. With the station brands you are looking at the easiest and most powerful way is to add the GW1000.

Older weather stations were not smart. There was no WiFi or Ethernet for devices or hardly anything but a laptop, smartphone or printer had direct network connectivity. Now with the IoT (Internet of Things) everything is smart and connected directly to the Internet without a computer. So naturally weather stations are too.

So what do you loose with an IoT weather station? Nothing. You gain reliability of being easily connected and not needing to run a computer just to put your data on the Internet. You can still view the data on the Internet, you just use a browser and go to weatherlink.com (for Davis), Ambientweather.net (for Ambient), Ecowitt.net (for Ecowitt), myAcurite (for Acurite). And you can go to Weather Underground for all of them. You could argue that you loose PC software analysis and having local data backup.

But you can still run PC software also, just requires the right newer software and perhaps some add on hardware. You can even run software on something that is a computer but doesn't look like a traditional computer (a Raspberry Pi). Or you can run a dedicated device like a Meteobridge.

Now you can free up your computer to do other things without needing to run weather software and without missing out on data every time your computer freezes up or needs a reboot, or it decides to update in the middle of the night.

To answer your last question, yes a GW1000 would work with any current Fine Offset clone.... BUT... the frequency has to match. There are three frequencies: 433, 868, 915 and depending on country the frequencies are restricted. If for example you get a 433 MHz Misol then you need a 433 MHz GW1000. You can't change the frequency, as it comes that way from the factory.

Unfortunately not all Fine Offset clones being sold today are current models. They still sell some prior generation models. Thankfully it is easy to spot the difference between new and older generations because they look totally different.

Thanks for the advice (once again).  This post is a bit redundant now as I've ordered my new hardware, and as you know went for the combination of a low cost clone and a GW 1000, so I'm gonna have fun when it arrives (hopefully this side of Christmas).  I have the WS View app on my phone and 4 different weather apps on my laptop ready and waiting.

Since my old station died we've had some real extremes of weather here in NZ, wind, heavy rain, hot temps and it would have been nice to have had a working station for all that.  Oh, well won't be long now  UU
