Weather Station Radiation Shield
« on: March 23, 2023, 12:14:35 PM »
Want to find a  Radiation Shield for my campsite station.
Ran across the link below on Amazon and have been kicking it around for some time now. This one doesn't have any reviews that I find, odd.

Anyone have this shield or know who the manufacture is would be great.

I use this inexpensive one to house ambient WH31E (temp/humidity) and WH31L (ligntning) sensors. It has worked OK for me. I do have it hanging on the branch of a tree, so it is mostly shaded.

This link has a couple of pictures of the installed sensors in this shield: https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=42649.

es I have had it for 1 year with a WH31 probe, it measures the temperature at +10cm from the ground. I painted the inside black and added spacers between the plates because not high enough to insert the Ecowitt probe. Product not qualitative, it protects from the rain and the sun, for the radiation I have doubts.... For an Ecowitt type probe it is necessary at least 8 plates high. There are no double plates at the top and bottom.

n your opinion is to measure the temperature on the ground, +10cm or 0 cm, do you need a radiation shield? In my country I believe that Météo France recommends a probe without a shield to count the frosts on the ground.

Here's a 5cm AGL sensor with a shield:

However, somewhere, I am sure I saw a picture and description in possibly the UK of a similar ground surface sensor that was supposed to be placed such the probe was barely above the tips of the grass. As the story goes, meteorologists got tired of cutting the grass (specified height??) so the grass was eventually replaced by artificial turf. Can't recall if there was a radiation shield or not but I thought the probe was bare.
Unfortunately, I can't find/lost that link.

Went with this one from Davis. However, since I placed my order, they raised the price over $25 US dollars.

Thx to you, I was inspired by the MO and MF for the Temperature at + 5 cms: I fixed the probe under the plate above and removed all the other plates, the WH30 is at ground level protected from the rain and without radiation protection. [tup]
