WH40 Reporting Double Amount
« on: September 10, 2022, 11:09:09 AM »
This is crazy. I've been using the WH40 for well over a year and have it calibrated to usually be within a couple of hundredths of an inch compared to a Stratus rain gauge. This morning however it seems to be recording double the actual amount. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I guess I'll pull the battery and power cycle the sucker.

That was it. The tipping spoon was 1/2 filled with crud which has me scratching my head. I had just cleaned the entire unit about 3 weeks ago and there was only a little bit of sediment at that time and that accumulation was over a 6-month period.

When I first installed the WH40 I built a splash guard with bird spikes out of copper flashing and #12 gauge electrical wire. This kept the birds from perching on it but evidently either the birds got creative in their bombing technique or something else got in there -- possibly insects.

I cleaned out the tipping spoon and now I'll wait for another rain to see if it's back to being accurate. I found with my splash guard and a multiplier of 1.05, my readings were usually spot-on or at least within a few hundredths of an inch.

I guess I will have to inspect the tipping spoon more often from here on out.

I've attached a pic of my setup. It's ugly looking but effective (usually).

that "splash guard" has been discussed several times here in the forum - new technology: 3-D print - but the idea is the same - and it works quite well
