WH 51 Soil Moisture flaky - HP2551
« on: July 26, 2020, 08:52:52 PM »
Hello,
I have a WH 61 Soil Moisture sensor that reads fine on the dashboard of my GW1000(EcoWitt.Net) and SOMETIMES will display on my HP2551.  It may show readings for a day or and without cause the reading disappears from the HP2551.  Tested batteries and they're good.  Router/WIFI is within reasonable proximity.

HP2551BU
firmware: Pro_V1.6.4.
hardware rev: V 2.0
wifi firmware: V 1.5.2

any help is appreciated.

The WH51 soil moisture sensors are lower powered than most of the other sensors and do suffer range issues which is compounded often by the fact the sensor is likely low down or at ground level.
Its also a known fact that the Gw1000 is slightly better at receiving the various sensors in terms of sensitivity.
You will probably need to relocate that sensor to nearer the HP2551 console or move the console nearer I am afraid to resolve this issue.

Thanks Mandrake!

I believe EcoWitt released a new gen WH51 with a different probe??  Do you know if they addressed the "sensitivity" issue too???

thanks

Yes, there is a new variant with a ceramic sheath. (WN51)
I am waiting for some to be delivered in order to test.

However given its still a single AA cell device that will be located at a low level people are likely still to have range issues.
I believe there are some posts on these forums where folks have used a bit of wire clipped to the sensor body to act a aerial to improve the transmission range.
If you have a search you might find that info.

When I have my new sensors I shall share my observations here as normal.
