Console for Ecowitt GW1002
« on: November 20, 2019, 03:50:13 PM »
I am thinking about giving myself a Ecowitt GW1002 weather station for Christmas. It seems to have the features I want except for a console. I would like to have a console that I could view either mounted on a wall or sitting on a table. I was wondering if an inexpensive WiFi android tablet could be used as a console. If so, what are the considerations including the pluses and minuses compared to a having dedicated Ecowitt console.

Why not just add an HP2551-C display console to the GW1002?

The trouble with the Android tablet solution is what app are you going to run? What is required for the app to get data? You can't run WS View because that doesn't show you everything in one view without scrolling and it goes portrait on a tablet, so it wasn't designed to be viewed as a console. You could run Home Weather Station template but then you would have to host that on a web server (in house or hosted), and I haven't seen how that looks on a 7 inch screen (it is crowded and shows all the info without scrolling), so I'm not sure if it was designed with a 7 inch screen in mind, fonts may be too tiny and this might be other other extreme of too much information. There are some other live views if you run applications like Weather-Display or WeeWx that are not so crowded. So that might be something to check out.  Oh I almost forgot ....now you can try Cumulus MX too.

I suppose after you have the GW1002 you can test and explore these options and see if you like how they look on a tablet. If none of them suit you then you can always get that HP2551-C later as an add-on and nothing goes to waste.

I agree with Galfert on this. Have a play with the GW-1002 and trawl the forum to look at photo's of the console displays.

The HP2550/1 colour console display is really rather good and shows everything in a concise display. If you order from Ecowitt you could always ask them to quote for adding the display.
Alternatively purchase the HP2551 which includes the display and add the GW-1000 which is the headless element.
Having the GW-1000 with the station allows you the luxury of being able to run lots of home weather software and display it as you like.
If you have any questions about the actual Ecowitt kit you can post here or if you are interested in prices (if not ordering via Amazon) then you can contact Lucy at support@ecowitt.com
Lucy usually responds within the day unless its a weekend of course.

Thanks to both Galfert and Mandrake. That is the kind of information I was looking for.

If you are getting the GW1002 I highly recommend also getting the RS-00001 for your outdoor temp/hum sensor. Either that or be sure that the sensor always is in the shade and never gets direct sun, or get a similar radiation shield or build a Stevenson Screen.

yes, this will work with Weewx.
The GW1002 is essentially the basic GW1000 with a set of specific external sensor arrays.

do you have the configuration link?
The gw1000 it's 433mhz?

where can i also buy sensors from other parts here in europe?

Here is the manual for the GW1002
http://www.ecowitt.com/upfile/201909/GW1002%20Manual.pdf

If you are using 433Mhz then that's more tricky as I am only aware of Froggit (Germany) selling most of the consoles and sensors in Europe and they only sell at 868Mhz

I think you will have to purchase directly from Ecowitt if you want only 433Mhz Sensors

There is little in it really.
From a pure radio perspective 433Mhz has higher penetration of buildings and therefore a theoretical improved distance.
Reality however at the power levels used that this really makes not a huge amount of difference.

Probably more useful is the ability to get additional sensors or other console options from a local European reseller and if that's important then 868Mhz is the one to go for.
If you don't mind ordering from Ecowitt direct and the possibly slower shipping then you can choose any frequency option since they make the equipment.
In Europe the majority of kit sold is 868Mhz and most of the 433mHZ is sold in Australia/NZ etc, though there are no rules that prevent that being sold in Europe and there are a few resellers that do but they do not tend to sell all the sensors.

You could try Misol as I know they tend to go for 433Mhz but I am not sure on there additional sensor options
