Title: Tempest and snow reflection issue
Post by: ValentineWeather on December 13, 2021, 04:38:45 PM
Well, I'm disappointed in the snow performance with the temperature running plus 10°. I was a tester for meteoshield and caught this snow reflection issue during early development and they addressed it by going black interior and changing the louver angles.

I didn't get involved with the Tempest development but thought since they came out in 2019 this issue would have been addressed by now but it hasn't. Over snow with light wind expect days of +10° at certain times.  It usually drops back down after half an hour or so but when the sun is just right this is what I'm seeing. Also where you are located and sun angle will come into play how bad it may be.  I'm located at latitude  42.883337°.

Is the solar sensor exposed to the sun, or is it also covered with snow?

IIRC, they are doing some statistical voodoo on temperature measurements based on solar radiation in lieu of a traditional heat shield, and would suspect that what you are seeing is caused by the snow blocking the solar sensor and messing up their math.....

It was clear the snow occurred Friday.  I've had it happen twice after the snowfall 11.5" Sunday and Monday under light wind and a sunny sky.  I actually have two units about 2 miles apart both displaying the same issues at almost the same time. They are sending a replacement on one of them that had a higher than normal battery drain originally thought was the heat issue but it's more than that.
