WS-80 Ultrasonic Anemometer/Multi Sensor Upgrade
« on: June 21, 2021, 03:19:29 AM »
Today I was informed my Jennie at Ecowitt that the reason my HP2553 was taking awhile to ship out was because the WS-80 Ultrasonic Anemometer/ MultiSensor was receiving an upgrade.

Likely the improvements mentioned in other threads around accuracy improvements.

Looking forward to receiving it in the next week or 2. According to Jennie it will be shipped out to me in New Zealand this Friday coming.

Has anyone else recieved a WS80 recently that may have the improvements added??

What I know is that, the newer model may/shall fixed water droplets which freezes the ultrasonic array sensors on very extremely rare occasions (especially storm with high winds or extremely high rainfall rate, like over 100-300mm/hr/s).

Just in from Ecowitt ;)

HI, Trent

The main upgrade is done from two side:

1.      Metal net was changed to round type with underneath water flow tunnel added. This made the sensor robust to rain, and it will solve high wind speed read issue.
2.      We have a silicon rubber standing near the ultrasonic sensor, and this can guide the water to be bypassed rather than sitting on the sensor, which can lead to no data measurement problem at windy + heavy rain condition.

Here are the main changes done to this design. It will be a more stable design against Tempest or another competitor’s model.

Super glad they have made improvements, I guess I will report any findings when I receive it.

Sounds like a change in design to better manage water flow away from  the ultrasonic sensor.

I’ll post photos when it arrives and someone might be able to send a photo of there’s so we can compare the 2 designs.

;)

About to get a WS-5000 for my birthday around this weekend, I wonder if Ambient will offer this soon as well.

I have one of these after reporting issues with rain and dodgy readings, I've just not had the same conditions since it arrived to see how much it has improved things.

Hopefully not posted these twice! It's not in it's final position so I was able to run out and take these.

My understanding is that the issues are caused by water droplets interfering with the ultrasonic measurement, those changes should help remove droplets and fix the problem.

in previus message ecowitt says: "     2. We have a silicon rubber standing near the ultrasonic sensor, and this can guide the water to be bypassed rather than sitting on the sensor, which can lead to no data measurement problem at windy + heavy rain condition. "

i don't see anything of this    :-k

Wouldn't the simplest fix for this be to just make the top half of the sensor array overhang the bottom by a fair amount?

I kind of thought about that too,

To kind of act as a deflector to any water that might get carried in by the wind.

Henry from Ecowitt said they have simulated intense rainfall and extreme wind conditions and they did not see any failure to read accurately or any spikes in the data following their modifications.

They tested in a wind tunnel by the sounds.

OK folks I have some pics here to show the updates courtesy of Henry in Ecowitt.

1.   We have under cuts on the plastic under the mesh nets. This leads to a better water discharge, and we have a round metal mesh net instead of the original bump up. So it looks better but more importantly it can have water sucked inside and drained much faster. This solved the problem for occasionally high wind speed measurement.

2.   The second change is from the up transducer side. We have a protection introduced so that no more water reaching to the sensor surface, and this solved the problem when at heavy rain time, the sensor stopped updating wind speed as the sensor was not in function with the water accumulated on the sensor.

This is awesome Mandrakre!!

So far Henry has been super helpful and definitely has a technical background which makes finding out these little modifications all the more interesting.

Mine has just shipped from China so I should hopefully have it in the next week or so.

Looking forward to it.

I am planning on buying one soon, but as I am in the US I am forced to buy through Ambient Weather.
I think I'll wait until their storeroom is refreshed before making the purchase.
