Davis Instruments Weather Stations / Re: console 6313 restart stuck
« Last post by thomas on Today at 07:21:12 PM »
I had a console freeze up after an update. Never could get it to work and Davis sent me a new one.  It was very difficult trying to reach someone at Davis.  After many call attempts I reached a time when I was second in line.  It still took 20 minutes to reach a live person.  Yes, since the sale the customer service has fallen way off.

Some METAR reports are not especially helpful for discriminating between the two different sea level pressures, either. Sea level pressure in a decoded METAR report would indicate SLP as “SLP (sea level pressure).” But for Altimeter (setting), there is no equivalent descriptor and no indication that it is, equally, a sea level pressure just like SLP.

It seems some (most?) weather station manufacturers are avoiding using the standard meteorological terms like station pressure, Altimeter (setting) or SLP.
Unless I'm missing what you're getting at, the altimeter in an encoded METAR is notated by an "A" followed by the setting, minus the decimal in inHg, but I know you must know that. As far as the equivalent descriptor, my take is that the people who primarily use this information have been educated on the similarities and differences of the two, and most novices don't care, unless they're "us".

Like I said in another post, things continue to be dumbed down for the buyer, hence the lack of description. At least the VP2 and Vue console tell you what you're choosing, and that's the way it should be, even if there is no choice. Which is it? Temp is temp, humidity is humidly, but the pressure is not necessarily the pressure, if you get my drift. Exactly why the type of reduction (or none) being used should be included, always. That irked me about the 6313, they tell you nothing.

I see the GW2000 has ethernet which I prefer to wifi

What do you end up going with?

Got the HP1553 and the GW2000.  Data reporting via the GW2000 to the regular weather sites and then to a custom python script that pulls the data into my local database 😎

Davis Instruments Weather Stations / Re: console 6313 frozen
« Last post by Goffprof on Today at 05:19:55 PM »
I recently replaced my failed 6351 console with a new 6313 for almost $400.  Setup was easy, it worked for a week, then the screen froze.  I called Davis tech support and waited for 30 minutes and hung up. 2 more calls, same wait, hung up.  I read through the WXForum posts and tried the paper clip reset in the “P” at the rear of the console.  It worked for a day and froze again.  I reset it again yesterday and it is still working ok. Since Davis was acquired in 2019, things have gotten so bad even long time customers are scrapping their stations and buying $70 weather-stations  that include a console from China on AliExpress.  I haven’t done that yet but if the 6313 freezes again, I will order a knockoff, retire my Davis 6250/6313 pair, and try the cheap version. I don’t want to change anything but Davis is expensive and apparently uses the same imported parts and “assembles” things in the US.

Has anyone tried one of the Chinese knockoffs that look like a 6250?

Maltbie-

Did you try the factory reset, which can be found in the Device Information screen.  When I first got mine, I messed up some stuff, so just did this.  It is a complete start-over and re-provisioning.  It is briefly discussed in the last part of the manual and some other Internet sources (Prodata).  It will revert to the original firmware and then update to the latest.  All data is lost.

No.  I don't want to lose my data and when it installs the latest update, it will likely fail again.

I spoke to Davis technical support.  They are aware of the problem and don't have a fix yet.

Davis is sending a new unit to me.  None of their fixes worked.

After you receive your new console, please post an update to this thread and inform us whether it fixed your problems!

Ouch! $120 for the hard book though.

It's not the shield has to be the sensor, we have a stiff breeze in the mid 40's and a full degree difference.

Davis Instruments Weather Stations / Weather Observer's Handbook 2nd Ed
« Last post by johnd on Today at 04:18:43 PM »
Not sure where to post this, but it certainly covers Davis stations amongst many other weather-station related topics.

Just a heads-up that the 2nd edition of Stephen Burt's Weather Observer's Handbook is due to be published next week. This is THE bible for weather station owners and I know of no other book that covers the subject in such detail. The 1st edition was published several years ago now and 'The second edition has been fully updated throughout with new material, new instruments and technologies, and the latest reference and research materials'.

It's not cheap I'm afraid but does offer genuinely in-depth description of all the various AWS-related topics.
