WIN10 Upgrade.
« on: July 29, 2015, 05:04:32 PM »
I am going to upgrade from WIN8.1 to WIN10.
Will ALL the GR Programs work on the new Windows?

• Are there land mines in the Bears' forest?
• Are MS products 100% functional the first time?
• Are you a gambler?

Good Luck!

I'd wait at least 6 months.

At your months it will no longer be free.  But maybe worth waiting an bit then doing it off the bat as there c will be bugs as there is in any new platform be it apple, ms, or linux.

Use VirtualBox and load it into a VM for testing.  :)

Here are my thoughts on MS OS upgrades...

Sometimes, when you are on the bleeding edge, the blood is your own.

I NEVER upgrade at least  until the first Service Pack is released.

I skipped Vista (gack!) and 7. 8/8.1 isn't so bad with Classic Shell installed.

I still have some XP machines running, including a "fresh" install on a box for an instrumentation server. (I rathole license keys...)

BELARC has an excellent HW / SW 'inventory' program that's FREE to download for "personal use only."

If I had Win 8, I would upgrade yesterday but with Win 7, I'm hanging tight until end of free upgrade period. Hopefully most bugs will be gone and less painful in 11 months.

I did the upgrade on my wife's PC. She has a 64bit running 7 premium. Took a little over an hour and went smoothly till  I found one of the bugs.  No wifi.  I should have done a little more research.  I was using a Linksys AE2500 net adapter which is not supported in Win10. Now to find one that is that don't cost a bunch. Any suggestion,  the  net isn't any help.

I picked up a Linksys N300 wireless-N USB Adapter at Radio Shack for $28.  It works like a charm.

Yep, I also have used Belarc Advisor for many years on all of my computers. Gives a good sense of how my security setups are doing as well as lots of other useful nerdy information.

I haven't planned yet to upgrade, BUT my 92 year old mother-in-law did on her own.  She lives 250 mi from us and is on the way to our cottage so we stopped there last Monday.  When we arrived she smiled, was a bit embarrassed and said I may have made a mistake... as with the update she thought it hadn't worked properly.  So upon checking she had Windows 10 upgraded and working fine, just that her ISP email account wasn't.  Turned out a little updating in the email settings and all is good.   Now if she can do it most of us should too :-P

Hi Paul,

well I dont think the problem is in the fact that people wouldnt be able to do it, it is more about do you want to do it at all... and here Im not so sure :D I completely undestand upgrade from Win 8/8.1, but if you have win 7, I wouldnt do it. And given I have XP I even cant, so I dont care :D

I don't even expect to be alive at that age, so upgrading software at that age is pretty good! You should get her on Youtube people would probably eat it up that a 92 year old can be efficient on a non-Apple computer  =D>

When I went to edit a couple of my web pages with Notepad++, I couldn't save the file. Tried "administrator" to run it. I am not sure which thing worked, but I set the permissions to allow write access to all of my directories. Also, "read only" got checked for the diretorys (My Docs, Music, Pictures, etc.), and I fixed that.

I think that Win10 created a new user instead of reusing my old login ID, which has full administrator rights. It seems OK now.

Our daughter and family were at the cottage at the time when Gram did the update and on the way home when they visited Gram they took a picture of her working with Windows 10 for sending to Microsoft - our son-in-law works for MS.

I did the upgrade to 10 on my laptop,   meh-not a big improvement

did another update and it knocked out my touchpad.  Had to roll it back.  Now afraid to allow any updates.

This has been the most common issue, doing its own thing with updates and loading the wrong drivers. Installed 10 on friends and the auto update did something similar with his Dell audio drivers.
Nothing wrong with waiting, should be less painful in 11 months before the free version expires. If issues are still being reported I'll just run Windows 7 for a few more years.
