Seawater Temperature Measurement
« on: November 29, 2022, 01:52:46 PM »
Would like to measure water / sea / gulf / ocean temperature within range of my WS-5000 series station.

I got a Ambient Weather WH31P Water Proof Probe Temperature Sensor - the one with the wired waterproof probe.

A few questions for comment please,

Thinking about a float arrangement with the probe attached keeping it at a constant 2-3" below the surface commentating for tides +- ~ 3' range.

I am in SW Florida on the gulf, so how do I keep the barnacles and other growth off? Place the probe float apparatus in a 6" dia flooded tube maybe work?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or discussion.

Bob.

as long as the sensor body/box doesn't drift away and is protected inside a waterproof compartment it should work.
Keep barnacles away with some mesh construction around the probe ...

Along with what Gyvate said , you might try applying some boat bottom paint to the container (in which you will be inserting the probe)  something with the deterrent (usually a copper component).  I only mention this as barnacle and sea grapes will grow on almost anything.

As opposed to a PVC tube you might try an aluminum tube, there is a natural , consider it it a marine pesticide for just the Al.  Might work a little better. Or even a copper tube

This has been a bane of mine with boats in the marina . But really there is no absolute choice , they will eventually grow, so you will need to yank it and clean it no matter what

Thanks for the replies.  It's pretty much what I thought. A bit amazed searches reveal no discussions on this topic on this forum.

Will go with a bottom painted barrel to suspend the probe in and just know I will have to clean it periodically.
