GW1200 or something like a WN1820_C console?
« on: March 17, 2024, 05:25:32 PM »
Hello,

Long time home automation nerd here about to make the transition to Ecowitt for garden and greenhouse.
Just curious if someone could enlighten me on some things as some info seems difficult to find on the Ecowitt website:

1. Would you recommend GW1200 or something like a WN1820_C console?
Similar in price but the console also has humidity and temp sensors.

2. Any other difference I should be aware of? IoT compatibility?  Do both publish on LAN  as webpage?  Is Home Assistant compatibility the same?

4. Would you mount a WN1820_C on the wall in a greenhouse with humidity drip from ceiling and such? Would be nice to read temp and humidity in the greenhouse but I can not see any IP44 or better spec?

Grateful for any other comments that might be useful.

The function of GW1200 and WN1820 is about the same. If price is same, go with WN1820.

Thanks Henry, appreciated!
Do you know anything about humidity classification for these consoles? IP44 or better? It just says "weather proof".
What happens if you get some humidity drip or accidental water spray from a hose? Does the power socket have rubber gaskets or is it water protected in any way?

Hi!

Where did you read that about "weather proof"?
The consoles themselves are built for indoors - as far as I know they have no IP rating and are in no way protected against moisture or similar influences.
Please don't confuse consoles and sensors (which - partly - of course for outdoor use).

You are probably right. I was thinking "weather proof" is salestalk when I read it on some place like amazon or such.
Probably possible to put it in some type of waterproof shell if needed though.
Appreciate the comment, thanks!

neither one has temp and hum sensors (except for indoor T/RH), but they can both receive all Ecowitt sensors - and they can all be shown in the apps - I recommend you read the WiKi and see http://meshka.eu/Ecowitt/dokuwiki
there is a table there which  explicitly tells which console/station you can choose depending on your needs - the apps are described ....

see remark above, read the WiKi - all your questions are answered there (and more).
in short the answers are; yes, yes, yes.

if you want or need to put the console/gateway in a humid environment, you can put it/them in a water protected enclosure with a windows in front which can be opened (if you want to change the view - using the WS View Plus app may be easier) - like a humid room breaker switch box.
