Ecowitt HP2561 - how do I get to main calibration screen?
« on: August 06, 2022, 08:28:42 PM »
This is almost embarrassing. I have set up including customizing the legend form pool thermometer, but I can find the Calibration screen to set barometer offset.

The manual is pitiful. For example for debugging connection is points to something like 5.13.1 and there isn't any section like that - not in the manual nor the electronic version.

I do wish their app allowed setup.

Is there a way to sue the settings in case of reset?

setup (gear wheel) --> gear wheel ---> gear wheel : headline /caption is "Calibration"
move the focus with the arrow up/down buttons to the REL Barometer field and enter the value needed (ABS Barometer + Offset)
e.g. ABS Barometer = 960 hPa, offset is 40 hPa => the number which has to be in the REL Barometer field is 1000 hPa.

once the focus is in the field the first digit will be bolder than the others - change the digit by using the (+) or (-) buttons
move to the next (or another) digit by using the right/left arrow button
once done, just move away from the screen by pressing either the gear wheel button or the return button.

it is best to do the calibration in hPa, even if you later on prefer inHg. Change the barometric unit to hPa before doing the calibration. You can set it to inHg after the calibration is completed. Using the hPa unit allows for more accuracy.

As the console has no API, a setup via an app is not possible (only weather networks or custom server can be done via app)

To get your proper offset, read https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0 section 5

Good luck

By the way - the process is described in the manual page 66/67 onwards. The language may appear a bit tricky, but in principle it is described there (chapter 4.12 Calibration mode).
https://osswww.ecowitt.net/uploads/20220803/HP2551%20Manual.pdf

I'm assuming that the whole configuration of a HP2561 works the same way as for the HP2551 - should this not be the case, my apologies
In my understanding it's only a hardware upgrade (or mainly canvas upgrade apart from the inbuilt T/H/P sensor) and not a software upgrade.

I just checked the HP2560 manual, and there the calibration (same text as HP2551) is in chapter 3.5 Calibration Mode

Thank you. Simple in hindsight. The logic of having some setup panels invoked by a menu and others by a settings button escaped me. Yet it was staring me right in the face!

The information Ecowitt gave me shows that the HP2560_C and HP2561 consoles have much worse range and sensitivity than GW1100 / GW2000. A fair amount of noise is caused by the TFT display.

There are places where the GW1100 / GW2000 receives a 5/5 signal, at the same time the console has a problem receiving any signal. Ecowitt himself does not know how to fix the console problem yet. I suggested them releasing a repeater in the Davis style. It is on their development list. They may release it soon, but they're terribly slow to innovate.

Such a solution would make sense

Sometimes I really get the feeling that their engineers are amateurs who are totally ignorant of designing meteorological solutions. It is worth mentioning the initial problems with measuring the wind speed in the first versions of WS80 / 90. The speed was still overstated, they only got it in some software update. I have seen their wind tunnel and unfortunately it does not meet WMO requirements. Hence, there have been big problems with wind measurement for a long time in Ecowitt products. The quality of the materials used to build their sensors is low. The WS80 top cover is totally didn't immune to hail with a diameter greater than 3-4 cm. Oddly, Ecowitt doesn't do anything about it. After all, these sensors work in the field. WS90 probably has a more resistant upper part of the sensor to heavy hail.

Question/remark:
1. what has this statement to do with the calibration screen of the WH25x0 console ? (the subject of the thread) - that's way off topic ...
I suggest that you open a separate, new post/thread with a subject that matches the content of your post where you can share your opinion

2. please verify the content of your mail regarding logic: e.g. "The WS80 top cover is totally immune to hail with a diameter greater than 3-4 cm."
what do you want to say with this sentence ? I assume you want to say the opposite of what you write. That the top cover of the WS80 array cannot stand/survive/resist etc. hail grains bigger than 3-4 cm (where probably not only the size but their speed is an important factor as not all hail gets created in the same height).
It would also be helpful to know about the source of such information. Also based on what tests etc.

3. regarding the wind tunnel:
Have you been to Shenzhen and measured, checked their wind tunnel and its parameters ?
If so, it would be useful/helpful to know more details (e.g. in what respect and degree which WMO criteria are not met) rather than just a bold statement.

Not sure what exactly you want to say with "customize the legend". Sorry for not being a native speaker.

Do you mean the units which are shown on the little display of the WH32B (WH32 indoor) 3-in-1 sensor ? °F or °C ?
(as far as I know they cannot be changed for a WH32B - or not changed in a simple manner - possibly with opening the canvas and applying some soldering in the right place - in a WH31 extra T/H sensor this can be changed via a DIP switch - for a WH32, and most likely also for a WH32B it depends "on the locale" probably derived from the transmission frequency: Americas: 915 MHz - °F, rest of the world: 433/868 MHz °C )

Or do you want to change the name of the indoor sensor displayed on the HP2551/HP2561 console screen ?
This can be done - description under https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0 HP2551 console section, sub-section 2.2 editing sensor display names
