WH65 temp/humid/rain replacement set/kit (including instructions)
« on: September 16, 2021, 11:10:33 AM »
Today, after two unsuccessful attempts by Ecowitt and an amazing odyssey of the 2nd shipment with two virtual deliveries (marked in the tracking systems as arrived and delivered but never entered my home country), the third attempt of Ecowitt was successful. The kit arrived six days after shipment with standard China post. They seem to have two shipment routes with different service providers in between: one via the UK and Royal Mail, one directly into Germany. After Brexit shipping via the UK into the European Union turns out to be potentially tricky (30% failures).
Anyhow, the kit arrived and the installation is potentially very simple - 2 screws, one cable to connect. Price (including shipment): 15 USD. [tup]

Installation instructions I received by email but they are also available at the ecowitt.com forum

Basically the cable coming from the main body which connects into the right (in the picture empty) socket needs to be disconnected from the old and connected to the new T/H/R piece.

Unfortunately, I needed to replace the same sensor over a year ago and this past month, the replacement one failed as well.

Initially, they sent me a replacement WH2320E unit. I had the temperature unit fail twice, rain gauge fail once. The replacement unit's anemometer failed but I used the old unit to repair that as well as the rain gauge.

Currently, I am using a WH32 for the temperature and once another part fails, debating on what I will do.

My WH65 array (the [not only] WH2320E outdoor array/unit) is running for 2 1/2 years now without any issues. The replacement kit I got myself out of curiosity and to have a backup just in case.  8-)
Using an extra WH32  is anyhow smarter as the ideal positions for wind and temperature (and rain) are all three pretty different.

What I don't know and what I'm curious about - and your statement seems to indicate is that the WH32 would be received by the WH2320E console and would replace the array reading ?
That wasn't part of my observations yet - but I didn't pay attention to it either, assuming the WH2320E console would be rather "stupid".

I also use a WH32, a WH32-EP, the WH65 array and a WS80 array - and have their outdoor temp/hum sensors selectively activated in different consoles (GW1000, WH2650, HP2551).
But that a WH2320E console can/could receive and process WH32 signals would be new to me.

The WH32 is only seen by the GW1000 and not by the panel. The panel is stuck on the latest reading as was the GW1000 until I replaced the sensor. The GW1000 outdoor temp reading is replaced by the WH32.

It was odd that the rain gauge replacement does not record heavy downpours (like the WH40 reports) but the original one worked fine until it died.

My original WH2320E is just over three years old.

Do you by chance have an Ambient Weather panel? . This is the most common issue when you can see something on an EcoWitt device (gw1000), and not on the original panel.

The sensor in my Ecowitt WH2320E failed and the console/panel can only see the WH2320E sensors but the GW1000 allowed me to use the WH32 in its place for non-panel use (the app/Ecowitt.net) and that is okay with me. I do miss the panel but use the new app much more often.

It was odd that the rain gauge replacement does not record heavy downpours (like the WH40 reports) but the original one worked fine until it died.

My original WH2320E is just over three years old.
what does this exactly mean ? Not heavy downpours .... but light downpours it does record ? Or you meant to say:  ...doesn't record even heavy downpours ... ?
In fact, normally, the WH65 rain gauge reports more than a WH40 (except for very light and long rainfall). The WH40 is likely to under-read stronger rainfall.

Is the bucket moving freely ? Does the console show rainfall when you manually tilt the "bucket"/spoon [e.g. with a finger] ? 0.2, 0.3 mm per movement ? Or when you (slowly !!) pour water into the funnel and make the bucket move/empty itself ? If you pour too strongly, the water will just go through without tilting the bucket/spoon ...
Or it doesn't show any rainfall at all (whether manually [funnel removed] or water poured into the funnel) ?
when testing keep in mind that there is a reporting relay between spoon movements and display on the console screen.

Did you cross-check on your GW1000 ? Activating the array and de-activating the WH40 (as the WH40 when active over-writes the WH65 rain sensor).

To try and clarify, both the console and GW1000 will not record any rain if there is a very heavy downpour for however long it lasts. It needs to be a significant rainfall rate.

If there is a steady downpour, it records, heavy it stops, then records after the heavy stops. It does not matter if recording via the consol or GW1000, with new batteries, etc. Both the console and GW1000 totals always match.

Its bucket has been cleaned, etc. and nothing makes a difference. It worked fine with the first rain sensor.

I have an Atlas and tube to compare. I do not have a WH40 but recall similar reports but that it appears to have been fixed.

The amount of rain it misses can be quite a bit. This week, out of a short downpour of 0.50" rain, it missed 0.30"

That sounds like a sticking issue. On mine , the tri wing job, I encountered this. Same symptoms. I brought the unit down and , after pulling the batteries , and playing with the bucket, I could make it stick by hand.

I'm not saying this is your issue, just what I experienced. I sprayed some silicone lube on the shaft area and that seemed to take care of it. I have not had the issue since.

so, when you say, replacement unit, you mean the whole array and not just the T/H/R piece.
And you did some cross-assembling over the time. So it is possible, that the rain gauge portion of the cable wasn't inserted properly or got damaged. Anyhow, the exchange of the T/H/R portion for 15 USD is not so expensive, so you could still give it a try. If the issue is on the mainboard (maybe not sufficiently tight closing after the re-assembling or just material tiredness), the issue will not be solved this way.

On the ecowitt forum there is a post showing how to do it.
At first I thought it was not so important, but according to what you say a bit of cleaning and silicone lube may be a good idea

I will give that another try with a different lube. I used a dry water/plastic suitable lube several times before (I do get spider webs in the bucket area at times that completely stop the bucket hence cleaning things out).

I looked back at my emails and they go back and forth for over a month with them in early 2019. I had an early version of the WH2320E and they sent a newer version but the sensors should have been compatible. The replacement WH2320E did not work properly out of the box hence swapping out the sensors. My unit was an early evaluation unit and was not even under a warranty. Ecowitt really stepped up to help with that in mind.
