Title: Cray Sold to HP
Post by: Bushman on May 18, 2019, 11:51:43 AM
Cray has been at the forefront of wx computing for decades;  interesting to see this story.  https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/17/tech/cray-jurassic-park-computer/index.html  BTW, I actually had a chance to work with one back in the day.  Astounding (as was Seymour Cray!)

How the mighty have fallen. The Cray was the second computer system I had the privilege of running code on. it could do in 30 minutes what took team of 10 military data analysts three weeks.

HP is taking over the computer world. Compaq bought DEC and then HP bought Compaq. Now HP buys Cray. Is IBM the next to go?

The way that IBM destroyed Weather Underground, I think that's inevitable.....

IBM makes way more from "services" than HW.   Like they sold their laptop biz to the Chinese (although my Thinkpad is pretty nice FWIW)

Don't forget Tandem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tandem_Computers), they had been bought by Compaq too.

IBM makes a lot from the iPower system and government contracts. IBM has a HUGE contract with Social Security.

IBM is also still into storage arrays.  My work has their latest A9000 flash drive system, replacing their XIV product.  We also have some V5000 spinner storage array for network based backups.
