Do you have a disc with drivers on?
That should be used first I would think.

Yes, you will for sure need to install the drivers for the USB to serial adapter.

If after installing the driver it still does not work, check the specifications to make sure that the adapter supports hardware handshaking. The RTS and DTR lines are required for use with the WS-23XX La Crosse consoles.

IOGear makes a good adapter if the one you have does not work out.

Are you sure the serial port is active/running? Can check by right clicking My Computer then selecting Manage, Device Manager, Ports (COM & LPT), then double click on Communications Port (COM 1) to see if it's detected and running properly. If all is good and running normally you could try right clicking on Communications Port (COM 1) and select disable then enable again for the PC to relearn the connection.

So this is real serial port built in to the PC?

If you are running the console in wireless mode (no cord to the remote thermo), make sure you plugged the cord in to the right port on the console. There are two ports, one for the PC, the other for the optional cord that runs to the remote thermo.

this is the real serial port built into the motherboard, and yes, it's plugged in to the station right, and the device manager shows the port is there, but still nothing.....

Some users have reported issues with the RJ jack not seating properly. Just for the heck of it, see if you can jam it in a bit and tape in place if needed. This may or may not be an issue but it does not hurt checking it out.

If you are good with a multi-meter, we can check the voltages on the RJ jack to make sure that there is opposing voltages on the RTS and DTR lines. This is required otherwise the console will refuse to talk.

Bad cables do happen from time to time so it would be probably be wise to verify its integrity if you can do so.

The pin out for the RS-232 cable for the
WS-2310/15/17:

On RJ-11 Side (clip down, telephone style connector) From left to right looking down on the connector Color: Blue Brown Green White

On the 9 Pin D-Shell (PC Interface)
Signal: RTS RXD TXD DTR
Pin...: 7    2   3   4

So Blue -> Pin 7, Brown -> Pin 2 etc.

Note that there is NO connection to the RS-232 ground (pin 5)!!!

Guess you'll have to get a Celeston telescope with hand controller to go with that cable now. Wink
