I was going through some video shot earlier this summer and ran across a lightning strike I had forgotten I had captured.
It was captured with my HandyCam so the resolution is not super great but for me it's a first anyway..

Whoa! Is it coming down this side of the trees? Great shot!

I think it's a reflection.  Perhaps you can see how the mirrored (less bright) strikes match up with the true strike directly above them (see red circles below).  Follow those strikes upwards and downwards to correlate them.

If the lightning were really that close, I think it's likely it would have hit the transformer instead (and maybe fried his Handycam).

Thanks for the kind remarks!  Definitely a first time event for me.

That part most likely was a reflection but the actual strike was fairly close. I heard that big pop and instantly the thunder.
For some odd reason we seem to get quite a bit of lightning activity in that same vicinity every year..or actually I guess I should rephrase that a little since we are not really all that lightning active..  Each storm shows increased activity in that area  Laughing

That old 50KVA pot that's in the picture must have a piece of #4 copper for a fuse anyway d'oh!  A few years ago lightning hit one span out from there and "barked" the top of the pole and made it all the way to the line fuse at the end of the street. I lost a router and a NIC during that episode..not to mention getting trampled by the wife who was talking with a neighbor on the porch when it all took place!    Talk about splitting Laughing  They were almost as fast as lightning.

I have been trying for the whole summer to get a shot, just one shot, of lightning and I have not come close.  Great job.  I have renewed optimism!!! Wink Rolling Eyes

Careful what you ask for.  You might want to rephrase that to "get a photo, just one photo of lightning..."  Just so the ones in control don't get confused.   Mr. Green

But God, you said Mark wanted a shock of lighting?  No Tlaloc!  You were not listening to me again!   Shocked

I heard that. lol  I only got about 5 bolts all summer, lots of cloud to cloud though.  Sadly the three best storms we had I was stuck at work so I couldn't go out and get good pics.
