I've been through Alpine. The scenery up there is beautiful. The news is saying the Wallow fire is threatening PNM lines now...based on historical events and model data (I'm ad-libbing here), the Monsoon should be around by the end of June.

It was always hard for me to make good time taking either of those two routes.
We've got one burning down here now. On the other side of San Augustin Pass, an 18 wheeler had an accident and sparks ignited the brush. It's burning pretty good right now.
It was a huge billow of smoke when I left home at 6PM and the news just showed it burning pretty freely tonite. US70 is closed out there and I'm going to take a ride out there later to see what I can see.

The main hiway (US70) is closed 4 miles from here at NASA Rd. and the fire is on the other side of the pass about another 4 miles from the blockade. Everything is lined up in front of the on ramp - almost looks like truck stop rest area without facilities!
Less than a mile inside my side of the closure is the little town of Organ and I wonder how they get in and out.
A little hazy out, no wind to speak of and I can smell the brush-burn odor but nothing anywhere near as bad as what Chris is going thru.

The smoke hasn't been quite as bad the last few nights thanks to westerly winds that have kept the worst of the smoke south of Albuquerque...however the haze is pretty strong today...and was a bit bad yesterday...but no smokey odor like last week. We're still under an Air Quality Alert. They're saying Areas of Smoke for tonight's forecast. Might not see smoke until after 8 PM... We need a fire season ender. Like a big one. Something to wash all that ash out...and put out the fires. ENSO-Neutral conditions are now occurring, so...  |

I guess they jumped all over it - I saw no smoke this morning so I guess it was out. To your question - more than likely it would. Our winds are still fairly from westerly slant. The fire was east of here. Still no real impact to my air from the AZ fires but the sunsets are spectacular. |

I guess I was a bit premature on that. It was still burning today and the smoke was hazing things up along the mountains. They say it was 100% contained around 4PM this afternoon. The Wallow Fire in AZ is only 10% contained and has claimed just shy of a half-million acres. http://www.inciweb.org/incident/2262/ |

100% would be a lovely number anytime now... I don't think we'll hear that for some time to come. One thing that always crosses my mind with these monster fires that are human caused - what runs thru the minds of the people responsible when they see how out of control things have gotten? Do they go thru daily life with that "So what?" attitude that seems to have swept thru society, believing that, as usual, others will clean up yet another mess they created or do they beat themselves to death with guilt and anxiety every minute of their lives? I couldn't handle knowing or even thinking that I may have been responsible for such a thing. |

I don't honestly think there are many people anymore that have a conscience. If they do, they know how to ignore it very well, or take drugs, alcohol, or whatever.
It's not like you have to be Einstein to know what you should not do under those circumstances. The guy that used to live next door to me was burning yard waste one day and he set the field behind my house on fire. The fire Department had to come. Everyone, including me was out there beating the flames with shovels. He should have known better. First it is illegal to burn things in our city. Second, it was very dry and the field was just stubble from wheat, I think. And then he left it unattended. I know he got a ticket. Never found out what the fine was. I was standing talking to him when the Fire Chief and a police officer approached and said..."Ok, who was the dummy that started this". I almost ran away. Every year on that day I send him a little reminder of that day. We are all capable of stupid things. No one alive has not done something totally idiotic. Killing yourself would be just as bad as the other. Standing up and trying to make amends is the best you can do for yourself and those affected by what you have done. In the case of a huge wildfire I have no idea what you might do to make up for it but something would be possible. It would probably never be enough to anyone but that is all you can and should do.

The living symbol of Smokey Bear was an American black bear cub who in the spring of 1950 was caught in the Capitan Gap fire, a wildfire that burned 17,000 acres (69 km2) in the Lincoln National Forest,[14] in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico. Smokey had climbed a tree to escape the blaze, but his paws and hind legs had been burned. According to some stories, he was rescued by a game warden after the fire, but according to the New Mexico State Forestry Division, it was actually a group of soldiers from Fort Bliss, Texas, who had come to help fight the fire, that discovered the bear cub. I just saw them talking about the smoke and it's effects on air quality on the air from the Arizona fires blowing into New Mexico. I am sure it will be on again.
