We've been missing out on the heaver amounts. We had 6-8" last week and about 15 mile away they had 10"+. We had about 3-4" yesterday and another 3" or so overnight and today. Best part was today it was a dry snow instead of the heavy wet mess. I love snow and enjoy watching it fall and blow around. But I have to admit I am not keen to work on the job with it. We are having fits staying caught up on service calls out in the county with two wheel drive trucks. One tech about got hung up today in a customer's drive in the one 4 wheel drive Honda Element we have. I have taken my personal 4x4 to a couple of houses doing a favor for the customer and trying to keep from getting too backed up on outside work but I hate like heck to do it. Reality is I don't get paid nearly well enough to take the risk. Even if I do get some mileage pay from the employer it's not worth squat if I get in an accident. We're talking broken TVs here. Not downed utilities. I've told more then one person to try reading a book. Worst part about the whole thing is the idiots around here are still trying to drive at normal highway speeds when just over the next hill the snow may be drifting across 6" deep. The younger male 4x4 newbies are the worst followed not far behind by young girls in front wheel drive compact cars and the older "I have a luxury car with 4 wheel drive and traction control" yuppies on a cell phone. I've drove a 4x4 for going on 20 years and have yet to put one in the ditch nor have I ever had an accident or traffic ticket in 28 years of driving and I'm determined not to start now just because the guy behind me left for work too late considering the road conditions. ....... He says while looking frantically for wood to knock on.

Mark, I can totally understand your feelings here!! Way too much of a risk actually for the small amount of pay when furnishing your personal ride. The outfit I work for expects you to go the extra 5 miles instead of a mile for an extra 0$ in the pay and get really defensive if you question their practices. I can agree 100% with the idiot drivers too!! ran into quite a few of them today. Especially on the way back from WalMart (which was closing early) I ran into one nut in particular that insisted on running full speed on acompletely snow covered road. He changed his tactics a little when he nearly spun out of the road over a bank! Kinda comical to watch it all in the rear view mirror One thing for sure I would have been doing as they recommended ..staying home..but I ripped something loose in my left shoulder and the doctors office closed early today due to weather... I needed some sort of relief albeit temporary! Now I am fresh out of shoulders! right one has messed rotator cuff and ligaments and I'm not so sure the right one doesn't now! Sam, Really sorry to hear about your mothers fall and her fractured arm! Glad you were able to get there and take care of the situation. Hopefully she will not have any troubles with this and it heals quickly!

Yep, I guess my tune has changed in the last two months. Of course, it's easy for DanS to bring that up , he is not here in the middle of this mess. It would be nice at this point to have an overnight low of 59, like him.

Then you got the folks up north still saying bring it on.... but I dont think anyone wants what's going on down there. We got brushed (barely) by yesterday's storm. A whole 1-2inches, and that's all that was forecast, but if you heard the weather and expected traffic reports you would have thought a blizzard was occurring or immanent. But considering it has not really snowed here since the first week of December, its not bad to freak out the drivers so they are extra carefull as it almost like out first snow of the year again. Here in the Pacific Northwest we need all the snow we can get. One of the ski resorts on Mt Hood has been closed most of this season, and the others have had reduced crowds because of so-so ski conditions coupled with the poor economy. The Olympic sites are in dire need of more snow. A lot of people and businesses that rely on ski resort related jobs are hurting badly this year.

I thought the mountains out there were getting buried by multiple feet of snow, roads and passes snowed in and closed?
Meanwhile, it appears Atlanta may be in the bullseye for the next round; Snowlanta?

Whistler has tons. That is where the alpine nordic and jumping events are. They chose to do the freestyle and snow boardings a Cypress which is much closer to Vancouver. That is where there is no snow, and they are plan B'ing it. Actually even Cypress has a 3 yard base at mid-mountain, but the venue's are obviously below that.

Then you got the folks up north still saying bring it on.... but I dont think anyone wants what's going on down there. Yep we would. Need that snow pack here for electrial generation, water supply, and to keep fire danger down this summer. Our mountains are kinda bare with freezing level hovering between 4-6000 feet. With the shift in the jet stream the whole state of Alaska is behind on snow fall. John

Should be not much of a problem with the water table this spring (in the lower 48) between CA's multiple drenchers/floods and the East Coast's snows/floods.
W Thomas, sorry to hear about your shoulders and hope the best for you real soon. Man, that's gotta hurt.

Slight Subject Change Alert.....
So now yesterday I got a rock induced chip in my replacement windshield (replaced the last time from a multiple salt/rock truck chips from our first snow storm in December). So the Glass company is coming out today to see if it can be repaired or if I will have to have another windshield replacement. The chip at it's longest point is 1/8 long, and 1/16 deep.
The vehicle that threw the rock was a good 100 feet in front me. My 12 year old daughter was in the passenger seat and it hit right in front of her. It scared her pretty good.
I must have a special Maxima with a rock attracting windshield feature. If it does get replaced it will be another $100 deductible.

Luckily we only use salt and sand here. But I have seen the slow mo rock hurtling at you before... ski trip to Banff Alberta, had just left the airport in a Ford Escrap with 16 clicks on the odo, I was on the trans canada highway when it happened 10 minutes outside Calgary. It was minus 20 or so, and I think that added to the severity, as the glass was pretty brittle. The huge piece of gravel (bordering on a boulder) made a nice divot. By the time we dropped off the car a few days later, it was a 12 inch smile. Return guy did not even say a word about their brand new car being return with such an issue. I hear it so common out there, no one fixes till spring. $100 deductible, I wish. Would your rates go up substantially with 2 "nuissance" claims so close together? I hope you dont have rain sensing wipers, I hear that increasing replacement costs quite a bit. Andrew Slight Subject Change Alert.....

I was told by my insurance rep, that glass claims don't affect my premium. So I guess it's distributed to all policy holders.
No I don't have rain sensing wipers. But I can tell you the first replacement was with a genuine Nissan Windshield. The actual replacement cost on it was around $450 the last time. My policy states that since the car has less then 12000 miles I can request an OEM glass, which again is what I did the last time. The chip is about 1/8 long and 1/32 deep.
The mobile glass tech. will not be here for another 2 or 3 hours. If he thinks it needs replaced then I will setup a "in-shop appointment" because it takes them longer to order the OEM Nissan Glass. ...And I prefer that they take their time to do it right with all possibly needed components and tools at hand.

TWC is putting another 8-10" in the mid-Atlantic region the first of the week. Their disclaimer is that it's too early to tell how strong the offshore low will be.

To despite 2 or 3 heavy squalls there. We managed no more than an inch at best. And with temps at or slightly above freezing. All of it melted soon after it fell. Probably won't be so lucky tonite with temps fallling into the teens.

the plow came by again.. When I drove into my driveway, I was pushing this giant block of ice.. The other drive which is wider , my wife uses. The drifts have narrowed it to one car width wide... the down side is my snowblower is in the lawn shed, but I can't get to it, both gates are buried 16 inches in snow and ice, so they can't move, and I think more snow and wind are on the way... what a peachy year.... I bet we have some interesting thunderstorms if spring every really shows up.

Of the 6-9" predicted we have 4-5" so far though it is still coming down lightly. The storm tracked a little more West and North then predicted. Considering the traffic mess you would have thought we had 12" on the ground.
