Hi,
I am currently studying Geographical information systems at University and as part of my dissertation I am investigating the sites of amateur weather stations in the UK, and investigating some interesting biases that can occur in their readings. It would be very helpful if anyone with a weather station in the UK would be able to share details about their station with me. I will be sharing the conclusions of the research with all participants, and hope that any recommendations will help to make publicly contributed weather data an even more useful source for monitoring and research.

I am looking for the following information:
· Whether you submit readings to wunderground.com
· If you do publish your data, how precisely do you supply the geographic coordinates of the station? Do you know your elevation above sea level?
· Your location in the UK (as much precision as you are happy with would be really helpful)
· What surface your station is sited on (e.g. patio, grass etc)
· The aspect of any slope on the site (n,e,s,w)
· If available, temperature data from this particular day: 27th May 2009 9:00 am
· The hardware that you are using

If anyone is able to help could they reply by personal message or on this thread which ever you prefer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou,
Sam

Hello Sam and welcome to the forum. You are very welcome to view my daily weather reports to Weatherunderground at the link below.

You can also click on previous data for any date you choose. You will also find information on my hardware, software, and location.

Good luck with your studies and feel free to ask any questions you like, someone will probably be able to help.

PS. Should have said my Wunderground ID is:-  ILINCOLN15.

If you have not yet done so, you might consider joining the Midlands UK forum http://www.midlandsweather.org.uk/forum/ and posting your request there.

Hi Sam,

I have provided data to WU since April 2009. My station ID is ISTOCKPO4.

My answers to your other questions are:-

2) I used Google Earth to ascertain my lat, lon and altitude. Lat: N 53 ° 21 ' 49 '' ( 53.364 ° ) Lon: W 2 ° 11 ' 41 '' ( -2.195 ° )
Elevation (ft): 261.

3) Woking Road, Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire. 3 miles east of Manchester Airport.

4) Above grass/soil.

5) The small rear garden slopes gently downwards to the north and away from the house. The station (temp, rainfall humidity) is located 4ft above the ground in the corner of the garden furthest north. The anemometer is on a 8ft pole attached to the chimney approx. 30ft up.

6) You can see that on my WU station.

7) Davis Vantage Pro 2.

Good luck and if you need any further info just ask.

I submit my weather data to the following:

My personal web site anthonysweather.com
Weather Underground KWVBECKL1
Weather For You
CWOP Call Sing WB8YUE

When sublitting data to the last 3 sites it is very important to supply that correct lat and long and also the correct elevation. If you don't do this. You data is all but useless to them. Especially to CWOP.

I've sent him an email as he asked for a personal message and may not be expecting people to reply on his thread.

I think SLOweather is emphasising the "UK"  Smile

Alan

I guess I should have done more than just underlining it...  Smile

Sam,

Although a few Brits visit this excellent forum you might fare better by asking in the forum below which is predominantly used by UK weather enthusiasts.

Woops! I see you have already posted there!  Very Happy
