I just bought a new computer running 64-bit Windows 7. Before I move VWS to the new computer, has anyone had problems with 64-bit machines? It is currently running just fine on a 32-bit Windows 7 machine.

Reports here (and my experience) indicate that VWS runs fine on 64 bit Windows 7. Issues arise if you need to run Virtual VP and want to use virtual com drivers. You should be fine with just VWS.

Thanks. I am also going to be using a USB/Serial converter with the new machine, as it didn't come with a serial port. Let the fun begin!

works fine here also, and I have a serial/usb converter. Have not jumped into VVP or start watch yet. Maybe today after golf.

Rick (up10ad),
I am using VWS, VVP, and StartWatch on Win7 64 bit. I am also using VVP with TCP/IP. StartWatch shows a memory leak for VWS that causes it to restart every couple of days. Are you seeing that?

Jay,
I have both 32 and 64 bit installed, but I haven't yet 'tuned' everything in 64 bit so I'm still running in 32.

I have VWS 14.01 p08 running fairly well with a serial/USB converter. It's a little flaky however. It will just shut down for no reason. Then, when I open something like Microsoft Outlook, it opens by itself and starts doing the sensor communication again. I'm losing a lot of data every day because of this.
When I set it up in 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, I put the VWS folder in the C:\ root directory like I have always done even with XP. I see that I have two Program Files in the Windows 7 root directory. One is Program Files, and the other is Program Files (x86.) I assume the second one is for older programs that are not certifiied for Windows 7. Would it be better to have the VWS folder in the Program Files (x86) folder instead of in the root directory? Those of you running 64-bit Windows 7, where is your VWS directory located?

try not running programs from c:\program files\ when that program stores/writes to that folder when using vista or W7

As I stated above, I have the program in the C:\ root directory. Just got back from lunch. VWS was gone again. I'm beginning to think it has something to do with the power management settings in Windows. Everything is fine until the computer goes to sleep. When I wake it back up, VWS is gone, and I have to wait while it reloads.

I had similiar problems until I went into power management and turned off the hibernate settings for the USB ports. This solved the problem.

I have recently successfully migrated from Windows 7 x86 (32 bit) to 64 bit. Here are some of my observations that may help others:
Almost all of my weather related programs are installed in the ROOT directory (C:\) with a few in C:\Program Files (x86) which is the 32 bit program file area:
C:\ImageSalsa C:\MovieSalsa C:\VirtualVP C:\VPLive C:\VWS C:\WDisplay C:\WeatherLink C:\Program Files (x86)\SoftWX\StartWatch C:\Program Files (x86)\2nd Speech Center C:\Program Files (x86)\ATTNaturalVoices C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder
In order to run VirtualVP I initially made use of the com0com drivers by following Steve's instructions about allowing unsigned drivers to install. I have recently changed to a combination of TCP/IP and com ports using the signed drivers from Enterlogic (not free but a great product). TCP/IP is used for VWS, WeatherLink and VPLive while a com port is used for Weather Display. It just seemed to work better that way even though WD can be configured to use TCP/IP.
All of my other weather related software seems to run fine. Both web cams work great, a Canon VB-C50iR network camera wired to wireless bridge, and a Toshiba IK-WB11A network camera in wireless mode to my AP. My audio forecasts and current conditions are created using 2nd Speech Center text to speech software from Zero2000.com to create MP3 files using voices from AT&T Labs Natural Voices, and they all work fine as 32 bit apps. I use VWSql to store real-time data to a MySQL database and access it with VWSphp without any problems. I have not yet set up my Bolteck StormTracker PCI Lightning Detector software but I don't foresee any issues with it or with the Astrogenic NexStorm/StormVue software. I did switch to the 64 bit version of Windows Media Encoder 9 Series and it runs great to create my movies.
I hope this information helps anyone making the switch to 64 bit Windows 7.
