I've been beta testing version 2 of LWC since August, so I am installing new versions of the weather software every few weeks for testing, but prior to that with version 1, I went nearly 4 months without a reboot.

My old Powerbook G4 has been running on the same boot of OSX 10.5.8 for over 6 months now.  We just put it to sleep when not in use.  Does that count?  Laughing

My current record on a Pen II 300mhz.  31 days.  Again I rebooted just because I felt like it.

As long as Windows update does not require a reboot.
Or
As long as my Virus software does not require a reboot after adding a new patch.

Yes they are all PC Computers, Mac Users say they never get Viruses or never get or need Security Patches.

I reboot every couple of weeks or after a Windows Update. This refreshes memory, applies any updates, and just ensures everything is working properly. I have gone in the past up to 4 months with no restarts and I remember my record of 8m17d on a TRS80 running my BBS....but that was before there was a thing called an update....

Yes. I put my old Power Mac G4 in sleep mode all the time (because that huge center fan sounded like a jet engine when on) before I decommissioned it a month ago. The uptime counters I had in Dashboard (and the subsequent command in Terminal, I think there is one) said about 67 days before I decommed it. My Mac Mini on the other hand, well, now that EvoCam has run out, and Dad says he won't pay for it (arggh)...but before it ran out, I'd have to reboot it because EvoCam bogged down the system every few days. Since nothing is running on it now (but that'll change when I set up Time Machine), it'll be running smoothly without problems, without a cause, until I decide to let it sleep for a few hours a night. (Gotta have it awake for those cron clean-ups, which I last heard run at 3AM during the weekdays, 530AM on weekends and 4 something on the first of every month, but I could very well be wrong on that one). I love that Mac OS X does this..I don't see Windows doing this on its own.

We get security updates on a regular basis from Apple, but yes. never get virus infections or need to run virus protection software.  As I have said numerous times on here, I also run an open firewall and have done for the last 10 years without any hacks or other malware issues of any kind.  That goes for all 5 machines currently on our network.

Oh... And to Chris... You have some serious issues going on with your Mac.  Either you have far too little ram for the amount of applications you are trying to run at the same time, or you need to run ONYX or Discwarrior and figure out what is messed up on your machine.  I have never heard of someone complaining about EVOcam as much as you do.  It is one of the most stable and forgiving apps on OSX.  If you are having so many issues with a program as well written as that, you've got something far more serious going on somewhere.

It's the RAM. It's 1 GB, the same amount that my PowerMac G4 has. The Mini has 1500 more (If I did my math right) MHz under the hood. I thought I'd already announced that somewhere on here. If I didn't, oh well. The RAM is likely to blame though, I won't be able to upgrade it for a long while (try three months at best).

Yeah... That is the problem.  2 gigs would be the minimum I would run with if you are doing any 24/7 kind of stuff and running a webcam.  Add a weather software program to that and you are going to be "paging" like crazy.  I run 2 gigs on my LWC/EVOcam iMAC rig, and 2 gigs on the Mac Mini I have running a two camera operation with EVOcam for a non-weather related website.

So... It is not EVOcam that is your problem.  You are just running UNDER the recommended system requirements for EVOcam and getting predictable performance issues as a result.  Wink

I knew that. But I can fully make use of 8 gigs by putting two 4 gig DDR3 under the hood of this little sucker.
Dad says 4 gigs will do fine (my laptop purrs with 4 gigs)..and only 4 gigs is supported by Apple.

Cool!  4 gigs will be PLENTY!!  Dancing

As I said, both my iMAC and Mini run perfectly stable with only 2 gigs so you should have no further problems with EVOcam demanding more ram than your system can part with.  Wink

It really is the "Magic" number between 1 gig of RAM and 2 gigs that makes all the difference.  Especially if the app is using all the video functions of OSX like EVOcam obviously does.  Once OSX starts having to page/swap VM around to all of your running apps, it is only a matter of time before the system starts to sweat and your performance goes down the toilet.
