Spring classes are now being scheduled:
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/rnk/Spotter_Training_Sched/Skywarn_Classes_2010.htm

It looks like I'll finally be able to take the advanced course this year.  One of the advanced classes is in Roanoke on April 22.

Hey Kevin,
I went to both Basic and Advanced last year and must admit that due to some situation such as advanced age or other excuse, I seem to remember little of the presentations. I will therefore attempt a refresher course of both in Bedford and then Rke. I look forward to seeing you at either and/or both. Thanks for the heads up.

The more I get in to the weather, the more I want to be involved.

I'm in the northwest corner of NC.  Our radar is from Blacksburg.

I'd like to know more about the Skywarn program.   Are the classes online or do you have to attend?   Is there a cost?  I'm new at all this weather stuff, but would love to be a part of it.   I'm a member of CWOP, and Weatherunderground.   Not sure if anyone ever looks at my charts, but I feel I'm giving back something.  Haha, I even report snow when the wind doesn't blow it into the next county... Smile

Edit:  Ok, should have checked the link first.....  Theres a meeting here in ashe on the 8th.  I assume this is only offered once a year.   I think I answered my own question.  But I'd love any input anyone has.

There's no cost to attend.

In general the classes are offered in each county no more than once a year, and in some counties on a rotating basis every 2 or 3 years.  This year, for the Blacksburg area, it seems that there are more classes in NC than usual, and more advanced classes than usual.

It's been about 3 years since my basic class.  I'll have to study before I take the advanced class.

Hopefully the one in Wilkes County will be rescheduled soon. I am planning on taking that one in if I can.
If not I'll have to venture up in Kevin's neighborhood and get the Bedford class Laughing

Funny thing..I was talking to Phil last year and he had contacted the emergency service guru in my county about scheduling a class and he told Phil there was no interest here Confused    All along I figured the NWS wasn't interested LOL!

It's obvious to those of us who live here he's only interested in the money and getting his name in the local paper when something weather related goes down ....BUT other weather people live here too  d'oh!

I don't know alot about some of this weather stuff, but I'm interested in learning.   I'm not the smartest guy around, but I can look at the sky and usually get the weather closer then what they can on tv.    I was very surprised to see ashe one the list.  I mean this is "ashe" county.  Nobody even knows we exist up here.

I understand fully!!  Like here in Smyth County in Va we just exist at tax time it seems! Other than that we are an uncharted area on the map! LOL!

We are being over run with flat-landers here.  Going to work the other day on snow packed roads and the idiots pass you going  45-50.   I keep waiting for one to slid off in the ditch so I can point and laugh.

Its bad enough we have to put up with them in the summer, much less the winter too.
Its called a summer home.... go home in the winter!   Ok, that was my rant for the day.. Smile

Roanoke is just a little far for me.  Sad

I hope you have a good crowd and meet lots of people!   Applause

So where were you last night, Wayne?   d'oh!  Wink

It was good to finally meet George Richardson last night.  We need to get some wxforum locals together, fire up the weather grill, and gather around my weather stump.

Ah-Ha, The famous Weather Stump. Had a hard time locating Kevin last night. He really doesn't look a whole lot like his Avatar! The meeting was worthwhile with localized information versus National weather service. After the meeting we wondered why the guys up and down I81 didn't join us. If they would drive like my wife, they could have made it in 45 minutes and the cops would never have caught them. We also wondered about another neighbor up in Wild & Wonderful. Hey Anthony, if you're lurking out there, come on back, all is forgiven!

Yeah Kevin, if we could get some of the slackers to join us at your place it would be great, otherwise we'll do it at my place and have a video grillout that everyone can join in.

All in all, if anyone has the chance, they should take in a SkyWarn meeting.

Kevin.. I slick forgot all about there being a class in Roanoke this early d'oh! d'oh!  Been so much happening here lately I evidently lost track of things!
Hate I missed it !  Sounds like it was a very informative class!

Seriously we need a I 81 Weather Gathering this year Laughing

Since I totally blew this one I need to shoot for Galax next month. As it stands right now they are having the Advanced Class at Twin County Hospital on the 20th of May IIRC
