db9 to usb
«

recently I purchased a new hp computer with Vista. I reloaded the ambiant software and connected using a db9/usb converter cable. When I try to connect I get the message "could not open communication port". Anyone know how to resolve this issue easily?

Look in the Device Manager for the COM port # assigned to the USB adapter. Keep in mind that if you move the device to a different USB port, it will probably change the COM#.

The converter should have come with a CD containing a driver. You may need to use that to get it to work also.

Evidently the Oregon Scientific 968 is not compatable with 64 bit Vista. Anyone else have this problem?

The WMR968 IS compatible. It really is compatible with any computer and OS. Your USB-DB9 adapter may not be. When I upgraded (briefly) to Vista, I was forced to replace the adapter with one compatible with Vista. I since picked up a PCI 2-port DB9 card. Either way, you can find inexpensive adapters or cards on Amazon, eBay and elsewhere. I'm now using Windows 7 x64 with the same card and no problems.

Using Oregon Scientific WMR-968 with Virtual Weather Station and Win 7 x64. Instruments include original sensors plus a THGN123N.

BTW, if you have your DB9 to USB adapter plugged in, check your device manager to see if there are any errors or unrecognized devices. If so, find the CD and install it. If you have problems, try installation and configuration in recommended mode or x32 or XP. If you have no problems, try your weather software with ports 1, 2, 3, and 4 until you find the one that works. Most likely it will be 3 or 4.
