Data loggers for dummies?

A data logger is a new experience to me and I have questions. The problem I have here in MX is the power goes off - like yesterday at about 4:30 and came back on 2 hours later, but I wasn't concerned because my new WMS200 was recording data - I assumed. The procedure is that when the power fails the UPS/regulator beeps for about 5 minutes during which time (assuming I'm here) I hit "Hibernate" and when the PC shuts down I shut down the regulator and get out the candles.
Last night when I restarted the regulator and brought the PC out of hibernation there was no data in the logger to download - primarily the reason I upgraded to this model.
This morning I've been running tests and it appears you can shut down VWS and the data logger begins and when you reboot VWS it downloads. If you only hibernate, the 200 apparently doesn't know the PC/VWS is asleep and doesn't log data. I also tested by pulling the UPS connect when shutting down and that seemed to make no difference.
The question is: is that a normal behavior for a data logger or do I have a problem? Or, should VWS be sending a signal (or lack thereof) to the 200 to indicate a "start logging". I'm on p87, I stepped back from p101 because I was getting multiple day entries in the daysum.txt file.
