I would like to incorporate a soil temperature probe into my weather station before winter. However, I have had a look at the OS THC138 and 238, but sadly neither are compatible with the WMR-200 protocol (3.0).
One other thought I had was to use the THWR800 pool thermometer, which is compatible, but I'm not sure if the probe cable would be long enough. Do any of you guys have a pool stat and would be kind enough to measure the cable for me?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Alan.

That's only going to get you a few inches down. How cold does it get where you are (checked your WU history, you only seem to have several days below freezing)? The housing on the 968 version is crappy, and I would be afraid moisture would get inside and it would crack in the cold (at least you dont have the chlorine component). I know moisture inside a "waterproof" unit sounds odd, but it happens with great regularity.
I am surprised they have not made a probe version for the 100/200 yet....

Thanks Andrew. I agree, the 200 is now supposedly the flagship station for Oregon and no soil probe. I have contacted Oregon and asked the question, could some other sensor be used? No reply so far.

How about sealing it in a Ziplock freezer baggie and run the cable out through a hole and silicone it with marine silicone - just a thought.

Even Ziplock freezer bags breath moisture through their pores. I wrapped/sealed and buried a 120volt plug/receptacle in a large freezer bag in our flower bed to power a water fountain, my wife wanted placed in the middle. It lasted about 2 weeks before it started setting off the GFCI breaker for that outside receptacle. My advice would take a sensor and coat it with a non-electrically conductive epoxy.

Remember, he cant bury it too much, or the wireless signal wont get to his base. I thought someone else posted that the floater did not seem to have as good range as the other sensors for 200.

The solution for the signal is to make a little antenna and let it be in the surface.

Thanks guys for your replies. I'm not too worried about the waterproof problem, I could always make a vented housing which would keep the rain off, but Andrew's point about the length of the cable could be a problem. I didn't really want to cut the cable and and splice in an extension. Maybe OS will introduce a soil probe in the future, I'm not holding my breath for that. Alan.

I will try to find my dead thc238, disect it, and see how it could possible be used to mod a regular temp station for a 200.
