I joined another forum (not weather related!) yesterday.

In my browser, the forum pages load very slowly. I've timed it several times---it consistently takes 11 seconds to load any page on the forum (even to refresh a page). You can imagine my frustration.

I'm on high speed DSL (not dial up), but I'm not experiencing this problem with any other web sites. It's the same whether I use FF or IE8. I've already tried the usual things: cleared the cache, logged off and back on, rebooted the computer, etc. I get the same problem on different computers. None of the other forum members seem to have this problem.

I'm stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions? As I said, I'm not having any problems with other web sites or other forums... it's just with this one particular forum. The forum runs YaBB (perl), in case that info is relevant.

Thanks!

Kevin...

EDIT:  I should have added: other members of that forum have indicated no problem for them.

Have you compared the slow site with others using ping or tracert? They won't tell you anything about the site itself but will give you an indication as to how the comms between you and it compare to other sites.

Forgot about this site. Here's a site that will give you actual download times for any particular webpage. I think it limits you to 5 tests per hour unless you want to pay for an upgraded account.

For me, it's this site that loads slower than most, especially on larger threads.  I believe it's all the weather sticker sigs that have to pull data from so many different servers.

Second the tracert suggestion... could be a bad network switch somewhere down the DSL chain.

If you have a laptop/netbook, try visiting that forum from home and from a different internet source (hotspot or library).

Thanks, Don!

I did that and checked 3 sites. Here's the average speed per Kb:

  • my site: 0.05 sec
  • wxforum.net: 0.01 sec
  • the other site where I'm having the problem: 0.01 sec

I did them 3 times and kept getting 0.01 sec on the last two (mine varied).

Yeah, I'll try a different ISP tomorrow. Thanks!

I tried using ping several times. There's too just much variation between trials that it seems inconclusive.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and called my ISP's tech support. After talking to someone for 40 to 50 minutes with him running me through various tests at my end and him running various tests at their end, he finally decided they'd have to send someone out to my house to check my lines.

Then 10 minutes later I received an automated call (a computer voice) telling me that they believe my problem had been fixed and asked me to check. I checked, and voila! The site loads quickly now!

The down side is that I don't know what was wrong or what the ISP techs did to fix it. So I can't tell anyone here what to do if they encounter a similar problem... other than consider calling your ISP's tech support.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions!
