I have a winxp laptop and need to ask a few questions

There are 65 processes that come up on my windows task manager.
I am guessing many at startup.

1. has anyone used a program that can determine which processes should start or wait at start up? Seen a few-don't know which to trust.

2. My actiontec modem from Qwest has a menu that shows modem utilization..  It at times says I have 23 open sessions- I assume to the internet.  Is there a way to track how many connections I have to the internet and what they are? Same thing- not sure if I trust just anything on the net.  Can't find anything on actiontec or qwest sites

Well, 65 processes running on XP does not sound unusual. My system is currently running 70 processes but it varies depending on what I am running. I would suggest a routine like Belarc Advisor which will analyze your entire system and then give you a report on everything it finds. This a free software tool for personal use only. It cannot be used on commercial sites.

The website for Belarc Adivsor is as follows. Follow the links to download the software.:

I use a product called The Ultimate Troubleshooter http://www.AnswersThatWork.com   This is a paid program, but has an evaluation period.  It shows all processes that are running and suggests those that can be removed safely and why.  I have my XP box down to 39 processes with all my weather software running and various other programs chugging away in the background.  On startup with only my AVG virus software on my running processes are 26 in number.  I think this program has made a huge difference in the way my XP box runs.
