Ken, I have an idea to perhaps slow down some spammers and those folks that just sign up to spread their pay-per-click-ad URLs around. Perhaps each new member needs to have a certain number of "reply" posts under their belt before they are allowed to start their own "NEW" thread. Perhaps 10 or 15 would be a good limit. In other words a new member can't start a NEW thread until they have already posted X number of times on the board in other established threads. The legitimately new member should not have a problem achieving the minimum post limit, after they have been introduced, participated in a discussion, and/or responded with "thank you" responses. I have seen this on a few forums across the nets, for example: http://www.maxima.org/ It seems to work very well. Just an idea. Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Sounds like a good idea but, what happens when that new person has a real question and cant find any other topic on there question? Guess they could hijack someone elses thread to ask there question.

I would not want to stifle a new person's intro, or an urgent question with a reply post rule....
Aside from the ad today, and one back on July 22nd, I did not think it was that prevalent. As long as the mod's move them to the "For Sale" page as they see fit....
Previous to these businesses posting, the last round of spam I recall was the ones that would quote some random text from a post on our site, completely out of context, then put their phishing/trojan/spam url in the sign off. These are the ones we want to definitely get rid of, and under a "reply only to 10 post" rule, these bad guys would still get it done. Having said that we only seemed to be "attacked" for a week or so... I think Ken put in some more security after that. Been so long since I signed up, is there an email confim process now?

I've already put a system in place using a SMF mod that checks the new userid/email/ip-address against the database at http://www.stopforumspam.com/search - it won't let 'known' spammer sources sign up for the forum -- we also contribute to that database Yes, to become active, the new registrant must validate their email address by clicking on a link sent to them .. then the account becomes active. For the first post, the CAPTCHA has to be filled out correctly. I don't mind handling the occasional new spammer that slips through the gauntlet. I don't want to impede 'real people' from finding the forum, signing up, and asking a weather question or finding help here. Please do let me know (with the report to moderator button) anytime you find a suspect posting. Thanks, Ken

Yep, I saw all the emails in my inbox this morning, and thought my goodness the forum was busy last night. I guess it was, just in a different way.

I vote we make Dan the Eastern Hemisphere mod for spam eradication, then he can clean all this up before us western east coasters get in.
Would still get the email notifcations on "replied-to" reply-to posts, but still. This was an ironic post that I noticed on blackberry on way into work.

There's a hack available for some boards that prohibits posting of links/URLs for new members, but I don't if SMF has it.

I was thinking Dan would make a good moderator when I saw that he had been on this forum for the equivalent of 255 million years.

Some forums have a system where the 1st post must be approved before it will show up. So if someone signs up and tries to post a spam comment they can be banned without their comment ever becoming visible (approved)

They'll probably figure a way around that (if they haven't already). Possibly a legitimate member signs up and gets on with a welcome newbe post and then starts spammin' ? Just a wag.
