Josh,

Is this an initial load/startup of Startwatch or has it been running in the past without any problems? If a new installation/setup, check your startup folders to make sure a link to VWS isn't lurking somewhere.

Mine was also doing this. It would open up 10 or more VWS's before I would realize it.
When the machine got hosed up with a Microsoft update (Thanks M$) and I had to reload everything, StartWatch started playing nice.
Its been a few months since it has opened up more than one instance of VWS.
Now every once in a while, it will mega spam F5Data's program. I will try to start and stop F5 for hours and hours (Eventually crashing the PC totally). There may be 100 f5's in the task bar. Sometimes F5 hogs the processor while it is compiling maps, so I am guessing that Start Watch thinks its crashed and tries to reopen it. I do not have the check box checked for 100% of the processor. Just the crash protection. I have started telling StartWatch to Ignore F5.  Confused

I don't check the computer every day, but it is common for mr to find multiple VWS icons in the lower right window. dragging the mouse pointer over the icons makes them all go away until the one that is really running is left.

Any ideas here, sound simalar???

Rick,

Sounds very similar to my situation. If it weren't for StartWatch my weather station would not run very well. I get anywhere from 5 to 20 VWS restarts in a 24-hour period. In the morning I find all of those VWS icons on the task bar and have to keep moving my mouse over them many times to get rid of all the inactive ones. That has happened ever since I installed VWS. StartWatch saved the day for me. It is set to restart VWS when it uses 135MB of memory or the process hangs. Ed has looked at my situation and can't put his finger on the problem but he thinks there is some kind of a memory leak in the software which he couldn't find. I gave up over a year ago and have depended on StartWatch ever since then to keep me running.

Josh,

Just for grins, can you explain what you mean by "startwatch seems to be opening VWS twice everytime"? How do you know startwatch is opening two copies of VWS? I'm just trying to figure out what you are basing your problem on so we can make a better determination of what is really going on with your system. If you run Task Manager, do you actually see two VWS processes running?

I only use this PC for weather any more, what would happen if I start to raise the memory threshold? When you have a memory leak does it just keep going up? I have 2GB in.

Don,
RE: "StartWatch saved the day for me. It is set to restart VWS when it uses 135MB of memory or the process hangs." I have been in a similar situation with VWS. I have continued to push my VWS memory usage up and it continued to restart via StartWatch until I reached 175MB at which point VWS has stabilized for me and has not restarted in a couple of months. Knock on wood.

StartWatch - View - Options - Programs- select VWS - Edit - check - Leak Protection - Close & Restart if memory above ___.

Should do it.

DAMN! I go running my mouth and last night, at midnight, VWS shuts down for the first time since May 9. I'll shut up now.

Josh
When I shut my computer off then bring it back online, VWS is the third program started with others following. VWS shows up once in the Task Bar. I now remember that when VWS crashes and restarts last in the Task Bar line, it shows up twice in the task bar until I click on one and then minimize. Now I only have one instance. Don't know whose "fault" it is, StartWatch, VWS, or Windows, but there aren't two instances of VWS running, at least on my computer.

Josh,

Try right-clicking on the task bar (in an area not occupied by an icon) and then click on "properties" (if you don't see the properties option then you have not clicked on an empty portion of the task bar). At the bottom of the window that opens up make sure the "Hide inactive icons" is selected. That may help close out the second icon. Once you have made that selection try moving your mouse over both of the VWS icons in the task bar. Hopefully, one of them will go away.

Regarding another note in this thread - I have now increased the shutdown memory level for VWS to 175MB in Startwatch and will watch to see what happens. I had tried 150MB but still had problems so moved it back to the 135MB level.

Mine would actually open up a ton. I could click on the others and they would have error messages saying that it could not connect to the com port (In Use).
I haven't seen them since the reinstall of the OS.

After setting StartWatch for VWS to 175MB I have only had two restarts and that was yesterday. Until my power failed this afternoon I had no occurences today. Will continue to watch but this has most definitely helped clear up the VWS restarts. I just wish I knew why it keeps grabbing more and more memory.

Lost again....I updated Norton from IS2008 to 360 2009. Evey thing went fine for a couple of days so I don't know if it is tied together. Now the problem, My wife called today and said I had the Blue Screen of Death and had shut everything down for awhile, then tried to power it back up. At this point, I am stoked because she has watched and listened enough to try the basics, Go Babe! Unfortunately it just keep trying to reboot so she shut it down and called with the bad news. Not much for weather today, I'll fix it when I get home. Now that I'm home it starts up fine but it appears that start watch is trying to open VVP,VWS and WL over and over even though it is already open and connected. This creates pop ups with all kinds of error messages and it tries to open them as fast as the extra tabs are closed.

Josh

Maybe this can shed some light on the situation

I don't  use Start Watch, however this is the same thing I would see if I started VWS from a shortcut on the desktop. Now I just start VWS by double clicking vws.exe in the VWS folder, and I no longer have the extra icon in the task bar.

VWS is the only program I've had show two icons when using a desktop shortcut to start it.

Brick wall - I am still having VWS restarts due to memory usage. I have increased the amount of memory up to 225MB and still get one to two restarts a day now. Have just increased the limit to 250MB to see what happens. I also notice that VWS keeps increasing in the amount of CPU Usage up to 90%+ and then Startwatch restarts VWS due to hogging the CPU.

I am almost ready to switch to my new Acer Netbook as the main weather system and am hoping that will take care of the restart problems.
