The only time I really have to fiddle with it is before bed... and it drives both the better and lesser half equally.

Amen...I'm not sure if there is a way to change it; I don't see any mention of it in the instructions.  So likely the answer is no.

Ya I dont think so.  I am pretty sure I tried to find when I got mine as well.  Dont know why some gadgets come default beep on, and some dont even have an off button.  Same complaint when I first got my os968 as well

Yes. Rotate the thumb wheel on the right side to "off" -- clicks when off. No more beeps. Just don't forget to turn it back on when finished programming so the radio will be on in case of alerts, etc.

I discovered that if you plug headphones in, the beep played through them instead of the speaker.  It's enough to damage your hearing though.
