Actually, I'm only a fan of eating meat that is raised primarily for food.  I don't hunt, but don't have an objection to hunters that eat what they kill.

I don't like the ones that kill something just to kill something.

So for keeping with the bird topic of this thread, pretty much limits me to chicken and turkey.  Mmmm. Turkey.

What if they get spiked?

Had not this been better?

I thought that picture looked familiar. I took that picture at the NWS in Glasgow Montana. Here is my link to the page.

That's an Alter-type wind screen to afford a better catch in the gauge (especially for snow).

And speaking of birds, when not at one of our feeders, "our" resident Ruby-throated hummingbird has taken a particular liking to perching on my wind vane. He weighs practically nothing anyway and I figure the added surface area probably increases the sensitivity of the wind vane to minor changes. Smile When the wind direction is varying greatly and the velocity increases, he hangs on as long as he can and eventually get's thrown off.

Yes - that is Sam's funnel  mod from http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=4590.msg40463#msg40463 - He was a great help with the set up . Yes the globs are silicone ..  I changed the funnel after I found one that now reads .25 MM or rain ..

In your pictures what is the electrical wire with two wire nuts, sticking out the side, used for?  Are you thinking a heater or was that a left over from a light pole or something?

Surprisingly, birds don't land anywhere near my rain gauge. I don't find evidence of it. But I do find evidence that they like the anemometer and temp/hx/dwpt sensor underneath the porch..as do spiders and the like.

On the side of the thing.

And there's bird droppings on the anemometer. Thank you birds..you've now weighed my cups down.-> I should add that birds are probably why the cup is very loose (and agitating everytime I go up there)..

I'm gonna stop hijacking here..just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

I was thinking something along those same lines but instead of wire, I was thinking cable ties/zip ties pointing in an upwards direction like that, and another zip tie to secure the bunch that you put around it.

You'd probably go for something around the same height (6-8 inches/150-200mm) above the rain gauge or whatever you put them on. Smile

Sad But, most zip ties are not U.V. stable and will likely degrade in the sun in about a year.  Brick wall

 Cool
