mmm you might find the smaller birds will still perch on the edge unless its razor sharp, however it should keep the larger birds off as they are heavier and it will hurt there feet. From my experience I've found thin long spikes work better as they hit there wings when they try and land and they cant find an edge to sit on.

See how you go.

What if they get spiked?

Had not this been better?

That's more for wind rather than birds, isn't it?

The WaterLog H-340 came with this debris screen and bird spikes.  Second view shows the screen removed.  It's too wide (7 5/8" diameter) to fit on a Davis.  Never seen signs of birds on the gauge.  The WaterLog is compatible with the Davis.

Bird Kabob.
It's just a piece of aluminum stamped in the pattern that gives the spikes.  I found a brand name on the bottom.  "CAT CLAW"

I wonder about the splatter effect and retention properties from the stamped plates at the bases of these spikes. I recall a different thread talking about the slickness of the funnel allowing all the water to flow inside and this appears to be another obstacle.?.?.?

I wondered about splatter also.  The gauge is calibrated to be most accurate at high rainfall rates.  At low rain rates, I have to add rain amounts to make this equal to the SRG.  On heavy rains, the gauge is very accurate.  Splatter would occur most at high rain rates.  ???

Perhaps something that snaps around the rim that you could stick pins into to create a "can't stand here" wall. The thinner the trim the better to minimize the reduction in diameter.  The height of the pins would keep birds from flying and landing inside and spacing between the pins allowing the blown sideways rain in. Nothing leaning over and obstructing the inside either.

Ok I know we are all interested in weather and reporting and sometimes we get consumed with being perfect (I know I am a perfectionist at heart) but....let's not endanger birds for that perfection.  It's not worth it.  Every once in a while I get a weird reading from my anemometer and I know that a bird took a twirl on it (Bandtailed pigeons more in likely).  so.. OK, free ride ... my stats are off a bit but it all comes out in the averages doesn't it?  Neutral

Sorry, don't really want to start anything just had to add my 2 cents.  I'm a weather enthusiast but also love the flora and fauna - and strive to protect it!

And, yes, before the replies start I like raccoons, squirrels and possums!

I found another that looks more the part, bird perch deterrent while being safe for them at the same time.  Very Happy
Gives you an idea on constructing something using a strip of sheet plastic and scissors. Think

I had some issues with birds using an "inside ledge" of my front porch as a nesting site.  I took the wire screen idea found here on wxforum.net and just installed it yesterday evening.  Hopefully in a week or so, I can confirm it's operation, but so far so good.

First ants, now birds.  Have you considered starting a wildlife refuge?

I have spiders too, just not as bad.

It would be nice if the birds ate the ants and spiders.  The cat would then eat the birds.  The dog would then eat the cats.  The Lion would then eat the dogs.........
Think   Hey wait a minute this is starting to sound like a story I heard as a kid.   Better stop here and stop hijacking Lynn's thread.
