Webcams Gone?
« on: January 02, 2018, 07:36:14 PM »
Is it just me? I'm not seeing any webcams anywhere in the world WU map. What now, policy change again? Server Maintenance. Can't find any notices from WU.

It gets worse.  when I go to my webcams in profile, it don't show active or nothing, it say I have no webcam.   Looks like WU pooched it good this time.   My guess is the cleaning crew unplugged servers to plug in vacuum.

Same here. What the heck is wrong with these guys? ](*,)  its been working perfectly.  I had 4 cameras running great then bam!  nothing, all gone.  What gives?  cant they give us some sort of heads up?  Do I start over now?

So, I tried to create a new camera.  Went through all the steps and its still says no cameras.  Happy New Year!

My cameras are "you currently have no cameras"; and not seeing any in wundermap either. Just like some Canadian government employees with IBM's Phoenix pay system.....

I get this.

I am going to make a giant cardboard cutout of it and place it front of my camera.

I have sent pictures from the Bloomsky cameras and of course that was not working out.   a few days and back where we were.  Then I sent IP cameras via a different way and 2 days and then they are not active.   I am sticking to sending only data from my Davis unit and be happy.   I doubt anything has changed on the WU side of the universe.

I have been told that if you expect something for nothing, nothing is what you get.  WU seems to be true to that saying.

As mentioned in http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=33258.0 - we are willing to setup a free webcam FTP upload.

After WU announced, they will continue their webcam service, and everything was up and running - we assumed there is no longer any need for this. But it looks like, there still is?

How many of you would be willing to switch to another webcam upload service? And under what conditions? Would you need to upload your weather data too?

If WU is not going to reboot the system yes I'd like your option with weather data available.

Yeah, I started shopping around after they announced they were dropping them.  Besides their reliability overall has declined badly in recent years.  You'd think being owned by IBM they could get some decent cloud services for reliability and so they don't bog down during bad weather (can anyone say Elastic Computing?).

Thank you for the +1s!

We will soon start a second survey, in order to re-evaluate the current need for a free webcam FTP upload. And whether you will also need to upload your weather data with it (or not).
If you want to get an invitation to the upcoming survey, just leave your email address in the current survey:

Thank you.

The big question is: will this ever change? Are you satisfied with this solution?

webcams are showing on my profile again, and are now inactive and awaiting approval. of the two dozen cams in my area, only a handful are active - the http cameras seem to be missing still.

WU website is very slow.   Yesterday I got HTTP 500 errors which show a problem at server level

I can now access to my config panel but the webcam is reported as inactive.   This is an URL webcam, I switched from FTP some time ago because their FTP server was overloaded and reported connection errors

Of course not.    I switched to Lookr (webcam travel) to display timelapses on my website.
The only negative side until now is that the free version includes advertisement

Great to hear that you are using our timelapse feature!
However, Lookr is for webcams that are already hosted somewhere. The idea here would be to create a new service which provides a reliable webcam FTP upload.

The first idea is to make it free, since we assume that most of the weather station owners would appreciate that.
But of course, if we would find out, that most of our potential users would rather pay a small fee than have ads, that's fine too.

Since it would be a big step for us to create a new webcam FTP service, we need to make sure, that enough people will use it. That is why we will soon launch a second survey.
