Alternatives to Davis Wireless Sensors?

While I like Davis stuff, the cost and size of their sensors leaves much to be desired.  Since Davis VP2 is simple 900 (902-928 actually)  mhz DSSS, surely someone must have made a wireless  sensor?  Anyone ever try?
