I would go with fog as at times you can only see a few yards in a dense fog unless you have a radar installed. Generally in lt. rain you can see half mile or better in it.

I only use the smartforecast for rain. As it will sometimes rain at my location and not at the Metar station. But if you have a web cam. You don't need a smartforecast. All your visitors have to do is look at your web cam image. Like yesterday (1/5). You would have seen fog, fog & more fog.

That is true, however, SF can be setup to forecast TSs and other changes too. I have a cam, but the cam doesn;t see all atmospheric changes, especially at night, if I'm not using .05lux setting.

This morning my "fog" overrode my "light rain" so I am going to have to leave mine to rain type events as well. Here is what I have so far for rain events, wind events, winter type weather, and possible thunderstorms. I had to do the winter-mix the way I did since my rain gauge heater will be running most of those times. Note: I "re-assigned" my icons for sand to show "windy" conditions since I get that a lot here, and VWS does not have a "windy" status condition. The two icons..... If anybody wants a FREE quality copy (better than what photobucket stores) of them just email or PM me. The Smart forecast as of now....

MadALwx I agree with you on the web cam thing at night. To me it seems that the Davis stations are much better suited to the SF that especially the OS stations.

here is what I use for fog OAT> 40 = clear, humidity > 100 clear and combine them on the boolean . The did work before we got too cold for fog here. will have to wait till spring now.

Like DA, your Fog setting will be very diff than mine.....I;ve had fog w/ Hum=93, Cloud Base <600. If I use your setting, it will always be foggy.

Don't use cloud base here for fog as you can look up most of the time and see blue sky. Just way marine layer works.

Anthony, After yesterday's hayday of wx....light/heavy rain, high winds, fog, cloudy/partly cloudy, TSs, hail, squal, and mostly your observation (using the wxcam for conditions vice icons), I have decided to go with using SF for advisory/warning conditions that pose threats. I guess w/ configuration of software, we sometimes get "funnel" vision. Thanks.

I made some more mods. Sand is for 25plus mph winds. Fog setting works beautifully, now. But will prob change once summer hits. Replaced cloudbase w/ density alt for clear conditions, which freed up a slot when metar reports are old. The other cloud cond are only used when metar is off. When cond are in b/w 1600' and 2800', program defaults to mostly sunny. Now use 2 rain conditions, which freed up another slot. Freezing rain is for <20F wind chill. Summer it will be changed to Hail for >95 Hindx. Replaced all icons w/ NWS and reprioritized the conditions.

Made some changes. I discovered that if you use 2 cloud base criteria, like <1090 and <1900, then a cloud base > these 2 will automatically yield ''some clouds''. This keeps from having to use 3 sets of conditions for cloud conditions. The other cloud base [640] is for fog.

Firstly I would like to say sorry to all you guys who have posted some great screen shots and information on the Smart Forecast topic that I started, they have been a really great help to me. All of those years that I had a cigarette hanging out of my mouth finally took its toll although I gave up smoking 4 years ago the damage was done, I have been in hospital for several months so have not been near the pc. I am now getting vws set up to how I need it, all that remains now is to find a company that can get me on the www. as at 68 years of age I am not computer literate. So once again, to all of you good buddies who helped me out on this topic a BIG THANK YOU

I'll take it. Since you are posting that you are home and out of the hospital? I wish you a speedy recovery. I hope it is as good as it can be. Most ISP's here any way. Offer some free storage space for a web page. And if all you are going to do is a basic VWS page using the built in web page builder. You will not need much space at all.
