I have asked this before, and I have added a few things in mine, but at least in V13.01, your condition options leave more to be desired. I will try to get a screenshot of mine this weekend when I get home to let you see what I have.

Yeah, pretty much the same here, except I added a condition for freezing rain. IE: when you are reading a rain condition and the temp is below 33F.

My experience is when you get 33 degrees and rain it generally turns to snow. Too get freezing rain you need super cooled raindrops falling and hitting a cool surface. Then it freezes at impact. These water droplets are already below freezing they just need something to cling to. Aircraft wing your car windshield etc.

Sam, Looks good. I only have 3 donditions. Lt rain>4, Rain>12 & Heavy Rain>30. I guess you could get fancy and put in a condition between 12 & 30 for maybe moderate rain. Seems like at one time I was using rain rate instead of hourly rain. Can't remember why I might have changed it.

There is no moderate rain condition, but maybe I should change mine from freezing rain to winter mix. That would be more accurate, since Scalphunter is correct about the freezing rain.

I have never even looked at this feature in vws. Sounds more like a "smart conditions" estimator, than a "smart forecast" though...?" Andrew

Ok just was not sure. I thought maybe it had some other logic in it, like the console uses to show the rain icon, when its sunny out.. Andrew

I'll second that. Many times during the summer I will have and the metar won't. Can sometimes make it bad when it's the other way around. But atleast you can look at my web cam and see what it's actually doing. Like right now. It's snowing.

Many thanks for all of the internal discussions, but really only one post was of little help, I guess you guys across the pond does not bother with trivial things like Smart Forecasts, thanks anyway.
Hope you and your families have an excellent Christmas.

Geoff, I think the point that can be learned here, from all of our babbling above, Is the fact smartforecast in theory sounds good to use, but in reality there is not enough "control" or "parameters" provided to make it very usefull. Again, most of us use our local METAR stations for our condition forecasts, and smartforecast as a "catch all" for the little micro-climates that sometimes occur.

Sam, your assessment is a tad off base. Smartforecast is very useful, if you take the time to understand it, adjust it to "Your" local area and it weather conditions. There is no 1 setting fits all. 9 times out of 10, the conditions displayed for my station are via Smartforecast. Without it, my displayed conditions would be incorrect 90% of the time. "That" seems pretty useful to me. Bob

Okay, bob, your point is well taken. and yes local area has a lot to do with it. I have a "inaccurate reporting" metar station close to me, and a few times when I am home, I have to force my condition icons manually. Could you do a screen capture of your settings in the Smartforecast panel? I would also like to see what others are doing in hopes of making mine better. On the old ambient forum and maybe even here, I asked for this type of info one other time and got no or little responses.

I totally agree with Racenet, I live some distance from a Metar station,Stanstead Airport to be exact, and on many an occasion it has been showing sunny at Stanstead yet where I live it has been pouring with rain. Geoff

My best "smart forecast" would to be able to figure out the right set of sensor parameters/conditions for, some clouds, partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, and overcast. And at the same time have VWS support the ability to "calculate for these".

I would like to see more opand I think the are called added to the smart forecast. example to set up for fog you neeed to get wetbulb temps with in 4 degrees of the temperature. there is no way at moment too do that correctly. Maybe I am looking at the wrong way going about it.

If I can make out what you are saying you would like to see some different boolean operators like "or" as well, to help with the smart forecast decisions. Am I correct?

Here's what I use. Started working it last night. The rain, lght rain, heavy, and cloud conditions seem to work really well. The fog has not been tested. I wish there was Boolean for OAT and DP. OAT and DP w/in 1.8deg of each other. Then the closer to each other, the more dense. Then fog would be real easy to use. I don't use METAR and SmartF, as they only update hrly. I would much rather have my station compute.

I wonder if dew point > 55 and cloud base < 2000 will work for thunderstorms. May have to increase the dew point a little more. Also, but about vapor pressure and humanity for fog? Will other variables change the pressure at which condensation forms?
