Not sure what may be causing this annoyance; from time-to-time I've experienced the same problem with certain versions of VWS.

Any suggestions to resolve, or a remedy with the software if that's needed, would be much appreciated!  Thank you....

My observation of weather forums is that VWS hanging is pretty much hardware independent. I was just indicating that Startwatch keeps my computer online in spite of VWS hanging Daily.

I've an OS WMR968 weather station, however as another poster indicated, the VWS hang is not related to the weather station hardware.

This hang-up used to happen quite frequently with other earlier versions of VWS, then cleared with subsequent versions only to occasionally again appear.  Such is the case with the version I'm reporting and now using, and it's frustrating, particularly with commercial software that's been around awhile and has gone through numerous iterations.  This evening, during a winter storm event here in Wisconsin, the first major of the season, I just discovered VWS was down for roughly 5 hours without updating any data.  I had little but the snowfall measurement, of course obtained with a low-tech measuring stick, to share with NWS.

Please remedy this software bug, and thank you!

so its still running, but just not getting any new data from the station?
that sounds like the connection to the station is being lost
is it straight serial or usb to serial
?

I had this problem in V13.01 p09, as soon as I switched off the VWS ftp functions and used a seperate ftp program for my webpage and jpg updates, all was fine.

My weather station connects to my PC (& VWS) with a straight serial connection.

I don't know that "running" would be an apt description of VWS once it hangs.  Data is not updated, while VWS continues to display whatever was displayed at the time it hangs.

I discovered again this morning that I collected no data during another winter storm yesterday, VWS halting in the late afternoon/early evening.

Have you tried backing out of p45? Uninstall through Pista then delete the VWS INSTALL dir. Do not delete the VWS dir. Then install p42, 43 if you have it.  I would post to my site but due to stoage limitation am unable.
Remember, this is beta.

If it hangs with each version of VWS that Chummy has tried, how would one determine if the problem is with the communication between the console and the PC?

For starters, have you tried a different serial cable?

He stated it happens w/ certain ver.  I think it would be software/hardware conflict, since it only occurs w/ certain ver, especially w/ Pista.
Only Chummy knows which ver.

It could be a number of probs.  Did you check here for debugging?

I'm running XP Pro, with all the most current updates and SPs.

Poking around in the software today I discovered a setting by which if it's selected, VWS will restart if communication is lost for more than 5 minutes.  Sure enough, an hour or so later while I was working on something else entirely, VWS restarted.

At least you have it able to restart, but it really shouldn't have to, especially using serial.

Exactly!  I've seen this in earlier iterations of VWS.  Every once in awhile there will be a release that I find VWS hanging as it does again.  Then there are other versions that are so reliable that it truly makes one wonder....

I am using a much lesser version that you have installed but I did have a similar situation where during an FTP event it would hang the application. This was while I was running it on a laptop with XP Pro and less than 1 gig memory.. anyway I had checked the full CPU during ftp box.. un checking that cured that problem... I'm not sure if that option even exists on your version but though I would mention it anyway Smile

I started saving copies of installs that were stable for 1 wk because I noticed some ver had generated ftp errors even though I don't this function.  I use Fling.  After reporting the issues, I was informed no changes were made to ftp functionality.

Today I'm finding VWS to be absolutely looney:  you may recall I found that selecting the option to restart VWS if communication were lost for five minutes seemed to be a (temporary) workaround.  If communication was lost, VWS simply restarted.  Well, today VWS is restarting several times per hour, interrupting my work on my PC repeatedly.

I can find nothing wrong with my system to explain why this problem exists, or appears to have worsened today.

So far V 14 seems better on it's ftp abilities for sure. I haven't had any major troubles with updating since I moved to V 14...except the times when my DSL mysteriously quit and when I was switch hosting servers.. The reboot function for the software doe work well in the event of a critical ftp error..saw it happen first hand too Smile

My weather server is running an AMD  CPU and Nvidia Motherboard..maybe the hang ups are related to a specific processor type??

I hope I'm not changing the subject with this question, but here goes. Is anyone else still having problems with VWS memory leaks? I'm still using Ver. 12.08, and I've always had problems with memory leaks. I have to shut VWS down and reboot the PC about every 4 to 5 days. It is definitely VWS.

I had very similar problems with version 13. I was forever having to reboot it for some reason or other Smile
I have not had to do any reboots with 14.0 knock on some really big wood !  except when I was trying to make ftp data changes while it was set to max CPU during FTP..that flat locked er up a time of two Smile
