WS2080 temp reads way to hot..
« on: October 20, 2014, 05:05:14 PM »
So i recently mounted my weather station to my old dish mount pictured below..

now before it was a few feet off the ground reading temps just fine.. but ever since i mounted it temps now run a good 10-15 degrees higher.. I checked other stations near me reading 67 and this is reporting 77-80.. I've calibrated so it matches stations around me .. i don't have a metal roof and when the sun goes behind the clouds it cools it off.. but when the sun peaks out for awhile it raises it to temps not accurate.. anyone have a clue on whats going on? who knows what this will read at 11am-3pm when sun is over the house..

The roof/gutter most likely.

Not while the sensors are mounted up there. You could try raising the temp/humid sensor up farther but you're still going to be in the rising heat. Ideal location is an open natural ground cover area (not gravel, brick, cement, asphalt, etc) about 5 feet up.

would a bigger shield work in place of that small one? or rising the pole its on now? idk

Changing the shield would not do any better. The shield can not change it's surrounding air temperature. It is just a shield from the sun and rain above. You could try raising the pole but I'd be willing to bet you would see slightly higher temps mid-day/early afternoon.

Looking at your photo closer I see another thing you could try but not sure if it will help. Rotate the temp/humid sensor on the pole so it's under the wind cups, out away from being over the roof, and, if you could extend the sensor mount arm to get it even farther out it wouldn't hurt either.

That weather station has plenty of phone wire to where you can mount the sensor under the roof eave. That would be much better than where it is now, but still not the best location, which would be 5 feet over grass. You can also buy more phone wire and run it further away, but look at Ambient's website for more info on that.

If you could lower a little more (see attch) to get away from the attic vent it may help even more but definitely getting better than where it was up top.

I wouldn't put my rain gauge up that high. If it needs maintenance from leaves and spiders, that would be a real hard place to get to it. The rain gauge should also be close to the ground around 5 feet up.

Any phone wire will do it, but watch that the red and green wires do not cross over on the ends. They need to be the same on each end.

Yes there are differences. There is the possibility of reversing the 4 lines. Try to avoid the little couplers (2 female connectors) and go for the line extension cord that has the male on one end and the female on the other. I have several of those little couplers and some are flipped with their connections while others are straight through. Always verify that the lines aren't flipped (ex. look to see the yellow wire stays on the same side).

oops, duplicate replies...sry but will leave this one to show those pesky couplers... ;)
