I just looked at your image this morning and...are those stars that I'm seeing or camera noise?  Looks like stars to me this early morning...showing 4:18 your local time.  Nice horizon and sky!

Indeed they are. Since my camera's are custom built I have two modes on them. Day and Night. Day mode is automatic camera settings, but night is long shutter times(3 second)! I have been able to see lightning with these and of course star movement. All my cameras also upload to youtube which makes for a boring channel most of the time. Last year I caught this storm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UihB9iQt5o4&list=PLu7dJllMb-gEYc73E8QKGyDGZZiXwhBYc&index=4

I would like to think I can stop with this hobby anytime but I just got a Raspberry Pi Zero with the new 8MP camera coming in the mail to upgrade my north facing camera so I guess I can't stop.. :)

Enjoy,

Nickolas

Hi morfeas,
when I first glanced at it it looked like war torn damage view, until I got my glasses focused and cleaned and then saw the beauty of the sky and buildings.

PRAT,
the darkness from the sun's glare has certainly obstructed an otherwise beautiful view.

Very nice.

Raspberry pi zero with 8MP camera is now up and running. This makes my 4th raspberry pi camera setup. These new cameras need a few adjustments but the larger FOV and better sensitivity with low light makes it worth it. This one points Northeast of Yuma.

Looks like I am ready for the North American Monsoon here in the desert southwest. I have finished my 4th web cam. All my cameras are raspberry pi with the camera module. Three are outside (East, Northeast, and Northwest) and one inside (south) pointing outside. The cameras are taking an image every 6 seconds during the day and every 15 seconds during the night. Night shots are exposed at 3.1 seconds for all the cameras except the Northeast, it is at 3.5 seconds. I transfer all the images to my server and then create youtube videos twice a day (9am for night videos, 9pm for day videos). All images are overlaid with weather data from my own custom built weather stations (that is another thread).

For now I am happy with this setup. I have thought about a 360° or at least a vertical cam. This way I can detect precip events (rain on windshield situation).

Here are the four cameras:

These are awesome!

What cams are you using where you can set the exposure to 3.5 at night?  I really want a better night sky cam

For that one I am using the Raspberry pi zero with the 8mp camera module. Hard to get right now but hopefully supplies will improve.

Nickolas,

If you do not mind me asking, what software are you using on your PiZero to take long exposure cam shots??

Nickolas,

If you do not mind me asking, what software are you using on your PiZero to take long exposure cam shots??

I use picamera and python. Code is below if you care to take a whack at it. I have enhanced the code to now give images every 6 seconds with an exposure of 5.9seconds. You can see my first test here at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL5eRo7TSsM

This code should work.. but I did gut it a little so some settings might need changed. But this is the bulk of it. camera.capture_continuous with burst mode set to true is how I get long exposures to happen ultra fast.
Code: [Select]
#!/usr/bin/env python
#
# Python weather camera using raspberry pi with camera module
# Copyright (c) Nickolas McColl 2016
import picamera
import time
from datetime import datetime, date, timedelta
from fractions import Fraction
import ephem
import os
import math
import sys

# Configuration
lat = "32.643356"
long = "-114.523051"  # Yuma, Az
dayfpm = 10
nightfpm = 10

def sun():
    global lat, long
    yuma = ephem.Observer()
    yuma.pressure = 0 # assume no refraction
    yuma.horizon = '-8' # Twillight
    yuma.lat, yuma.lon = lat, long
    yuma.date = datetime.utcnow()
    sunset = yuma.next_setting(ephem.Sun(), use_center=True)
    sunrise = yuma.next_rising(ephem.Sun(), use_center=True)
    sun = "day"
    if sunset > sunrise:
        sun = "night"

    return sun

def nextpictime(mode, filename):
    nowsecond = float(datetime.now().strftime('%S.%f'))
    if mode == "night":
        nextsecond = math.ceil((nowsecond / (60 / nightfpm))) * (60 / nightfpm)
    else:
        nextsecond = math.ceil((nowsecond / (60 / dayfpm))) * (60 / dayfpm)
    if nextsecond == 60:
        shutil.copyfile(filename, webimage)

    pause = nextsecond - nowsecond
    return pause

camera = picamera.PiCamera()
camera.start_preview()
camera.CAPTURE_TIMEOUT = 60  # Seconds
time.sleep(10)

if sun() == "night":
    # Nighttime shot sequence
    # Crossing over from day
    camera.exposure_mode = 'off'
    camera.awb_mode = 'auto'
    camera.framerate = Fraction(1, 6)
    camera.shutter_speed = 5900000
    camera.iso = 800

    #take night picture
    for i, filename in enumerate(camera.capture_continuous('{timestamp:%H%M%S}.jpg', resize=(1440,1080), burst=True, quality=20)):
        sleep = nextpictime("night",filename)
        time.sleep(sleep)
        camera.annotate_text = (datetime.now() - timedelta(seconds=6)).strftime('%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S') + '\n'
        if sun() == "day":
            # switch to day mode by ending this loop
            break

else:
# Daytime shot sequence

# take day picture
    for i, filename in enumerate(camera.capture_continuous('{timestamp:%H%M%S}.jpg', resize=(1440,1080), quality=20)):
        sleep = nextpictime("day", filename)
        time.sleep(sleep)
        camera.annotate_text = (datetime.now() - timedelta(seconds=6)).strftime('%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S') + '\n'
        if sun() == "night":
            # switch to night mode by ending this loop
            break

I have that code setup as a service that restarts if it quits. (In this case it would quit went we transition at sunset/sunrise and restart with the correct exposure)

Enjoy,

Nickolas

I've been having good success with my Ubiquity Aircam mounted outdoors under the eve peak. Setting the fixed focus was a little tricky but manageable.  I recently figured out how to get NTP to work correctly in the camera so that I don't have to manually set the date and time after a power loss.  Upload and data overlay are handled by Meteobridge.  The camera is facing southwest.
