I thought I'd post a picture of the PC I use for both connecting to my Davis VP2 and home automation with Homeseer.  CompuLab makes these and they come in a number of different models.  I'm using the Fit-PC2i in one location and the PC3 here at home.  I choose these as they use very little power (my original reason for buying), are fanless and don't take up much space.  I don't use a monitor; rather I remote in from my other computer. At my remote location I'll likely switch to solar power for the 2i.

My Fit-PC3 has an AMD G series running at 1.65Ghz, the PC-2i is running a slower Intel Atom processor.  Both with 4GB RAM, plenty fast for this application.

The FiT PC3 looks nice! much better than the old FiT PC lol.

I use a Linutop2 with the 1GB SSD with a 30GB HDD and running a slimmed down version of Windows XP. Also runs my internet radio stream (I rebroadcast internet radio on FM to my neighborhood)

I've been mulling an upgrade to the Netbook I have at my remote location and considered these boxes but for the following:
- they ain't cheap
- there is no battery (need UPS) unlike a netbook/laptop
- there seems to be a lack of configs available (i.e. larger SSHDs)
- no cheap way to add peripherals
